I served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and two combat Infantry tours in Vietnam.  There were many of us who came back but some of us like Rambo never came HOME.

The way Vietnam veterans were treated in the US was also drastically different than Afghanistan or Iraq veterans now. They were often discriminated against, people spat on them at airports, and protested them. This movie was one of the first to give them a voice.
That talk he had with the mother was real tough to listen to. The Army sprayed this chemical called Agent Orange to kill the trees in the jungles, to keep the Vietnamese army from hiding in them, and plenty of veterans developed cancer because of it. Vietnamese kids developed mutations too. It does not get talked about enough as a dark time in our history.

Sylvester Stallone is such an underrated actor and writer.  He is credited with over 40 screenplays.

Apart from writing Rocky (which was split into rocky 1 and 2) and of course put in an amazing acting job in that movie.  He also co-wrote this movie and as you can see he really comes alive at the end of this movie.

Part of the Green Berets' job was to disrupt supply lines. This is why Rambo destroyed the gas station and gun store.

My wife's uncle just passed away not long ago. He received 3 purple hearts from Vietnam. He will be missed and we are proud to have him in our family. RIP Thomas

Rocky is a must now. Stallone's writing credit in this movie was for a rewrite because the original plot followed the book and Rambo went on a rampage in the book killing several civilians as well as the cops.
For Rocky, Stallone wrote the whole thing (wrote it in three days) and went from movie studio to studio trying to sell the script. He even ended up selling his dog because he couldn't feed him and the dog. Part of his demands were that HE play Rocky. Most of the studios didn't want to have the movie centered around an unknown actor and passed on it. Finally United Artist took a chance on him and bought the screenplay (Stallone was able to buy  back his dog Butkus and he is featured in the movie). It is about a down on his luck boxer who gets a shot at the big time, but it is NOT a boxing movie, it's a love story that has boxing in it.

"What a visual treat" she says in the first 2 minutes of the movie, I was thinking the same thing.....subbed.

When I was a teen, in high school, I lived in an agriculture area. I went fishing with my grandparents. Everyone had a fishing pocket knife or a buck knife for hunting/field dressing a deer. I had a 10th grade science teacher ask if one of us had a pocket knife, he needed to cut something for a biology experiment. This was 2002. In 1982, in the country portion of America, having a knife isn't a crime. The cop made up a weapon charge just to have an excuse for an arrest.

My father served in Vietnam. He would take troops and equipment up da nang river . These boats weren't armored very well all he had was a 50 cal for anything they would encounter. He experienced the same crap people being vile treating him like dirt because he was a soldier in a war that was hardly understood. The only time I ever saw him cry at a movie was the final scene when John tells Trautman about his friend.

Filmed in Hope British Columbia Canada. The wooden bridge Rambo crosses back on was slated for demolition several ago. The citizens raised money for it to remain, the replacement bridge runs parallel to it today with a commemorative plaque.

That end scene is so powerful, I've seen this movie so many times and it still leave me speechless.

Interesting fact… Stallone did most, if not all, of his own stunts in this movie.  When he landed in the tree, he actually cracked a rib or two on impact with the branch.  So when you hear him yell, “Ahhhh, Jesus!” that is an actual cry of pain from him.

Another interesting fact, not sure if you’ve ever seen Blazing Saddles before (new to your channel).  But the guy who plays the ultra-sadistic deputy Art Galt in this movie (Jack Starrett) is the same guy who plays the barely coherent town drunk, Gabby Johnson, in Blazing Saddles.

That final scene where Rambo unloads all his frustration and sadness… Stallone himself has said numerous times that it was the most emotional scene of his entire career.

Regarding Vietnam veterans  when they came home their welcome was many times was as depicted.  Two of my uncles were Nam veterans. They never spoke of their experiences.  Sadly much of the abuse was from veterans of WWII & Korea. The end of the movie was chilling. Because what he says was so accurate to what those coming home from Vietnam really felt. I am a Desert Storm veteran.  Vietnam veterans made sure we were welcomed home properly

The film was shot in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. The town scenes in the movie were shot in Hope and the nearby Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, called Chapman Gorge in the film, while the rest of the movie was shot in Capilano Canyon, Golden Ears Provincial Park and Pitt Lake in Pitt Meadows. During the production Buzz Feitshans replaced producer Ed Carlin, who suffered a heart attack.

The locations chosen for the film initially experienced unseasonably warm and sunny weather during the filming, which posed challenges since the crew had counted on an overcast setting. However, a period of heavy snowfall delayed the production by two months. Other delays were caused by injuries to the cast during stunts, including Sylvester Stallone sustaining a serious back injury and several broken ribs in particular due to performing his own stunt of dropping off a cliff and into a tree. I served in the U.S. Army for many years. In 1991 I would have been part of the first advanced team in the first gulf war, but because of a back injury i could not participate. I was willing to fight of course, I was trained to do so, that was my duty. I took an oath as many have to proudly protect my country. I could not, that being said, my oldest sibling, my brother severed in the National Guard, until he was drafted into the Vietnam war, he did two tours, in two of the most dangerous places there. Thank GOD he unlike many he returned to the USA alive, and unhurt. He had to live with those memories for the rest of his life, GOD rest his soul.

I was a small town cop during the time this was set in. We even had cruisers like these. I didn't know anyone who would have been antagonistic to a Veteran passing through, but I knew a few dumb ones and a couple of crooked ones

I can't help myself, I have to shout it out: Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the music here, was THE BEST. The Grand Master. Always able to get the emotion the movie needed. And I maintain that his music here is the most important element to make it work.

10:45 As an FYI, this was not directed by the same director as Robocop (nor Robocop 2). Robocop was directed by Paul Verhoven, and First Blood was directed by Ted Kotcheff.

The ginger who made sense was a very young David Caruso.  His movie career was very limited; I mostly know him for Hudson Hawk besides this.  However, he became a major TV star thanks to NYPD Blue and CSI: Miami.
