Hi Guys! Welcome back! In this video, we're stepping inside a world where a Ralph Lauren Home meets Scottish castle restoration, where the charm of a Victorian Gothic manor mingles with the cozy nostalgia of a grandfather’s library. In this video, I’ll show you how to master the Dark Academia home décor trend through what I like to call Bookish Grandpa Style — a warm, moody blend of historic interiors and masculine home decor. Inspired by everything from the Knives Out mansion and Harry Potter home decor to the rugged elegance of Scottish castles, Gothic Revival architecture, and the quiet luxury of a whisky lounge or gentleman’s club, this interior design style celebrates worn leather, antique books, shadowy woodwork, and time-softened textiles.

Whether you love architecture history, medieval interior design, or simply crave dark moody home decor, I’m breaking down 10 insider design tips for capturing this richly layered aesthetic. From selecting the right architectural styles and interior design styles to arranging curiosities, lamps, and framed portraits with precision, I’ll share interior designer tips that make your home feel like it was pulled straight from an autumn novel. Consider this your guide to dark academia decorating — a space worthy of a Traitors castle, lit by candlelight, scented with whisky and old paper. Stay to the end for 10 styling tips that will turn any room into a Dark Academia design style sanctuary.

Now I have a name for my friend's style. He's actually been a bookish grandpa for a couple of decades without realizing it! I can't wait to tell him 😂.

Well, my grandpa was born in 1892 so while we lived in "reduced" circumstances, he had his own "Study" a 12' by 13' room where he entertained his gentleman friends and retreated to for a nap after dinner,to exchange correspondence with his friends and other academics, to read and enjoy an after-dinner drink. Furnished with a large bookcase, the center section had glass doors for 'rare' and treasured books and to store wine and whiskey glasses of course. The matching desk and ornate chair, both pieces intricately carved with roses, (he loved nature) - overlooking the garden. His desk chair served as an armchair with leather studded seat and part of the desk was also inlaid with leather. Somehow, there was room for a small couch and a small dining set - a Victorian-inspired, Rattan table with matching chairs. I remember the table had a Chinese red laquer top. The study even had ambient lighting, task lighting and overhead lighting. So there you go - this man had manicured fingernails, fought in both world wars, had cosmopolitan views and was "green" way before there were tree huggers and environmentalists. My own study definitely has some of those vibes. Oh, and it is worth mentioning that greenery, seasonal flowers, fine china coffee cups along with Persian wool rugs and a fine art and paintings are essential. No true clutter or (sometimes questionable) collections, just a few meaningful pieces, unless you have the space and the money to show off your collection. It is your life - so live it in a style and a mindset that suits your own circumstances. Thanks, this was interesting, as are all you videos - well done!

This is exactly my homes style and almost my entire adult life, I’ve been told that I’m depressed. I tell them that this is what makes ME feel comfortable, not you. I like dark wood furniture with all my plaid blankets and old books. It is tastefully decorated and I feel it suits me. Why is it assumed that is depressing? I think living in a home with all white walls feels institutionalized.

Love this style. We turned our formal living room into what we call the reading room. Autumnal colors, antique oak, trinkets from travels and those that came before. As a career literacy coach, it is the room in which I spend the most time.

As a Bookish Grandpa finally putting together his library, I appreciate the ideas.

Eternal darkness: sanity's requiem. The aesthetic.

You always do such a great job translating an emotion or theory into a design that can be implemented in one's own home. That is not just a professional skill, it is an art, a gift that I am grateful you share with the rest of us. I learn a lot from you. Thanks for sharing your abilities.

I like this style, I must say. I may not be a Grandpa, but I am definitely bookish!

Oh , to have a house with a dedicated library! I love it when you give book suggestions that coordinate with the style.

This makes me think of the extremely bookish set design for the Nero Wolfe television series on A& E channel in the early 2000's. I loved their contrast of the brownstone's classic design sensibilities and the 1947 Christian Dior fashion and music. All you need is a well lit upstairs greenhouse full of exotic orchid plants.

Warm cosy, classy, mystical and magical, fascinating, relaxing yet never boring style. Reader's and collector's paradise. Loved it always and love it now. Thank you! ❤

Thank you for making an autumn-adjacent video every week! I feel spoiled! Appreciate how you distinguish between Dark Academia and Bookish Grandpa. There is definitely a difference and you explain it in detail! My favorite example of this style is from both the Parent Trap movies. Annie meeting her Grandfather for the first time: She smells him.. “(I’m) Making a memory! Years from now, when I’m all grown up, I’ll always remember my grandfather and how he always smelled of ….peppermint and pipe tobacco.”

I absolutely loved this video and watched it all the way through. I have always been a Bookish Grandpa of sorts. I have a modest collection of books ranging from Shakespeare to Dickens to Edgar Allan Poe and Ibenjoy them all. This style brings out the academic in me in that it is a style that draws me in and comforts me. I can imagine myself in that setting smoking my pipe with a coffee and whiskey after dinner. And last but not least, I love your style and your videos. You are beautiful. Blessings on your journey.
