Changing "hybrid" to "replacement" mid video was poetically accurate to the discussion.

Man I've missed this kind of content from Ratatoskr. I really appreciate how thoughtful and articulate his arguments are, even if I sometimes disagree with them.

Unpopular opinion: All remakes should come with the OG on the same disc.

Played demon souls og because of you

My takeaway is that what is truely special about demon souls is its amazing atmosphere

so thank you!

It's been 3,000 years

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. Nerrel draws the conclusion that remakes should stick as closely to the originals as possible, but the closer you get the more likely it becomes a replacement, making people less likely to seek out the original experience. That is the more troublesome outcome if you want to see games as art. When remakes make more drastic changes from the original it encourages people to see them as a separate, new experience, a reinterpretation that can exist alongside the original. It's basically like adapting a book into a movie, the book remains the original and you are free to enjoy both as diferent pieces of art. Nerrel says you can't say you've played RE2 if you've only played the remake, and he's right, just like you can't say you've read LoTR if you've only watched the films.

The fact that the anti-remake section at the start uses all Majora's Mask 3D footage is not only fitting, but correct, appropriate, and appreciated

Yep, design constraints foster creativity.

i hate when some people feel like they need to shit on the og to play the remake

Finally Streamatoskr is away and Videotoskr has returned

NVIDIA be like: we put Bluepoint into your GPU

Much respect for quoting Electric Underground.

Given his example of NG3, I think Electric Underground's position is that the best remakes are the remakes of busted games that were otherwise destined to be forgotten and hated. So like Dirge of Cerberus might be a good candidate in this model.

"I cannot believe I didn't see that earlier" I can after the chair

To be fair Electric Underground was arguing for bad or broken games to get the "replacement" remake treatment. He wouldn't want legendary classics to be replaced by a remake.

26:33 The Sam and Max games actually do this! You buy the remasters now, but the original games come with them as free DLC so you basically get both versions for one price. More games need to do that.

I think the problem with remakes isn't that any particular kind is intrinsically bad, and more that there’s systemic commercial pressure working against them being good. A remake CAN be faithful to the original art direction, but doing something flashier and more obviously high-fidelity works better in marketing. It CAN have its own artistic vision, but it’s safer to wrap that vision around surface-level lip service to things people remember.

There is a big diffrence between trying to fix something that went wrong like with Ninja Gaiden 3, and trying to use a classic game's clout to make a quick profit

This lingo got remastered halfway through lol.

The hate for DS Remake in this video gives me life.
