I think that Captain Cuttlefish is just his name, but he's actually an Inkling. But I'm down for a new species of Cuttlefish!

Cap'n Cuttlefish isn't a cuttlefish. That's just his localized name. In Japan his name is actually Atarime which means dried squid. Similarly Callie and Marie are named after more squid species, their Japanese names coming from the words for the Bigfin Reef Squid and the Firefly squid respectively. They are not cuttlefish. They are squids.

I personally don’t think we’ll get another playable species this soon but I absolutely love the idea of anything more. Cuttlefish characters would be cute! Maybe they’d be a subspecies of inklings where they’re only denoted by specific hairstyles or something idk. It’d be cute!

In the octo expansive art book there were actually some cuttlefish idols! If you look up cuttlefish idols they show up.

I don’t think they’re hinting any anything. In 2 they hinted at Octolings by having MARINA be an octoling. If they were hinting at something there would be much more to go by.

Cuttlings are a stretch because they gave us the us a very clear version of the story to read out and all of these refrances are very small and obscure, they would be cool though.
(btw, captain cuttlefish is an inkling, cuttlefish is a last name)

Cuttlefish could be a good hybrid. I wonder what they will look like

Inkling-like Cuttlefish are already canonically a thing. Two singers, like Callie and Marie. They are the predecessors of the squid sisters.

For those who haven't watched much lore videos, it has been hinted that some band members (who aren't inklings) have done turf war before, so it isn't a stretch for us to get some random fish species as a playable character. Of course, i don't think it's likely either, but if they do I'd like to see the beta fish be playable bcus Finn from the Bottom Feeders looks cool.

As much as I would prefer more customization for the already playable characters, I liked the theory of callie and marie being cuttlefish instead of inklings (same as captain cuttlefish) I dont know if I want the cuttlefishes to be playable, but I like the idea that they hide because they're similar to the inklings in the same theory. I hope it's something like that!

I was really hoping for sharklings and shrimplings but Cuttlefishlings could be really cool tbh

Edit: DID NOT EXPECT THIS COMMENT TO GET 200 LIKES jeez I wish my shorts would get this many

Personally I think the manta ray has a decent chance. While they may not shoot ink, they do have toxins as shown in the big man fight.

Idk if cuttlefish are the thing that's gonna get added, but it would be interesting to get some sort of third species option since this game is so obsessed with the concept of things in 3s. There's 3 of everything if they can help it, so a third new species being introduced would make sense in that regard too!

I’m a little convinced with the subway thing, thats what they did in splatoon 2 with the 8-bit octopus in front of the deepsea metro entrance

@da_pwo 3 years ago

Btw captain cuttlefish is an Inkling

@casperfl 3 years ago

Cap'n Cuttlefish is actually an inkling despite his name

@chickenx777 3 years ago

captain cuttlefish is an inkling and his namenis just bad localization at this point, but i like the idea of cuttlefish having been raised or military trained by a tribe of cuttlefish and using that to explain his localized name

@Turquoise32764 3 years ago (edited)

That actually would make a lot of sense! There are 3 cephalopods, squid, octopus, and of course, cuttlefish. So it would make sense to have all cephalopods as playable characters.
Edit: I guess they are the only cephalopods that PRODUCE INK meaning my point is still valid.
