TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - Paisal Weskurni still vividly remembers the moments when the KM Virgo Transport sank.

Paisal Weskurni (26), a resident of Parakan Tolok Village, RT 002 RW 001, Wangunsari Village, Sindangkerta District, West Bandung Regency, West Java, was one of the survivors of the maritime accident.

Met by TribunJabar.id at his home on Wednesday (September 23, 2026), Paisal recounted the terrifying moments when the ship he was traveling on from Surabaya to Banjarmasin began to list and eventually sank.

Paisal said he was smoking on the third deck with a friend at the time of the incident.

Suddenly, the ship began to list to the left, but he and his friend were still joking around because they hadn't realized what was happening.

Shortly afterward, Paisal heard a loud crash from the port side of the ship.

"I was smoking in the cigarette holder on deck 3, with my friend, when suddenly the cigarette holder tilted to the left. We were still joking around," Paisal said.

He then heard a loud crash from the port side of the ship, but didn't know exactly what had happened.

Paisal said that most of the passengers were resting after the ship departed from Surabaya.

He said the ship was supposed to depart at 12:05 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), but only departed around 9:17 a.m., with a journey to Banjarmasin estimated to take about 13 hours.

When the ship began to list, Paisal immediately shouted to warn the other passengers.

"Hey, the ship is listing! The ship is listing!" he shouted.

Upon reaching the rear of the ship, Paisal saw many passengers panicking and scrambling to grab life jackets.

He briefly returned to his room to get his belongings, but ultimately decided to grab his life jacket and head to the rear of the ship.

Paisal said he began to believe the ship was sinking when he saw the ship tilting more severely to the port side.

What made him even more worried was that there were no warnings or alarms from the ship at the time of the incident.

"There was no leaking sound, no alarm. Normally, there should be an alarm to wake us up," he said.

In a panic, Paisal then followed the ship's tilt until he reached the hull.

He said he didn't have time to get into a lifeboat and chose to stay on the hull for about five hours.

According to Paisal, there were an estimated 100 people on the scene when the ship began to sink.

Before the ship completely sank, a horn sounded once and the ship capsized completely.

Paisal witnessed several other passengers jump into the water, while others tried to reach the lifeboats.

While clinging to the hull, Paisal and several other victims tried to calm themselves by reciting the Quran and praying.

After the morning call to prayer, a large wave swept Paisal off the ship and into the sea.

Fortunately, he found a rubber lifeboat and managed to climb aboard it along with several other victims.

"Thank God, everyone on the lifeboat survived," said Paisal.

Shortly afterward, a coal barge arrived and was the first ship to rescue the victims.

Paisal expressed his deep appreciation for the barge crew who assisted in the rescue, including a crew member named Jerry and the captain.

Before becoming a victim of the maritime accident, Paisal was reportedly planning to leave for Kalimantan to look for work.

He had received information about the job from a friend and planned to work in the palm oil plantation sector or as a driver.

The journey to Surabaya was also fraught with several obstacles, including a motorcycle accident before he reached Padalarang.

However, determined to work in Kalimantan, Paisal continued on his journey.

On the way from Surabaya, the vehicle carrying approximately 16 people also suffered two flat tires, one of which burst in Nganjuk.

Regarding assistance from West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, or KDM, Paisal stated that he had not received any.

"I didn't receive any assistance from Mr. KDM. The only people who received it were from Garut and Cianjur," he said. (*)
