Yet another informative and excellent narration. Warren appears to have bitten off more than he could chew with a corps command. That said, his abilities and comprehension (including of Grant, who only retained command after the debacle of Shiloh, by default of the timidity other Union generals) are plain to see. The summing up of this clip was completely justified. All the best, from the UK.

What a man, what a officer, what an American

This story brought a tear to my at the end. G. Warren was an amazing General and always took his men’s position into consideration, in all battles. He had no ego, he just explained things and situations as honestly as possible. Hot head Generals like Sheridan, took advantage of the fact that General Grant liked him and used this influence to get people he didn’t care for into trouble that didn’t exist. This is the reality! This is what I’ll remember about Grant and Sheridan!

I like these biographies you've done. I'd love to see Albert Sidney Johnston next for Confederates. John Reynolds at some point too.

54:10 A very brutal, honest comparison of Sheridan, the consummate warrior and the university boys of lesser fortitude

45:11 here is Warren's take , in his florid antique way of writing, why he is so depressed. It truly shows that he was not fit for core command. Because he was unwilling to risk his men's lives, when the speedy end of the war demanded exactly that.

From the algorithm.

@Have History will travel Do you agree that Warren was more an engineer than a Corp commander? I grade him as an engineer an A, Corps commander in the later stages of the war a D. Do you agree with that?

My goodness he was a bitter disrespectful ass as a subordinate. Nerds like him and rosecrans never got along with anyone above them, if they believed themselves to be "intellectually superior". I just wonder why he didn't get fired during the overland campaign.

On the other hand he was a great engineer put in command of troops meaning his talents were wasted.

Not wishing to take anything away from Warren’s talents nor abilities, I can’t help but be amused at him referring to Grant as a drunk, sitting atop a horse, smoking a cigar.
As short as Grant may have been, Warren could not occupy Grant’s shadow.
