Jochen Mass was one of the most influential figures in German motorsport. His career spanned from the 1970s to the 1990s and was characterized by versatility, technical finesse, and human greatness.
Early Years and Rise to Formula 1
Born on September 30, 1946, in Dorfen, Upper Bavaria, Mass began his professional career as a sailor before turning to motorsport. After successes in the German Racing Championship, he moved up to Formula 2 in 1972 and finished runner-up in the European Championship in 1973. That same year, he made his Formula 1 debut at the British Grand Prix, driving a Surtees-Ford.
Mass achieved his only Grand Prix victory in 1975 in Barcelona for McLaren. However, this success was overshadowed by a tragic accident in which several spectators were killed. He competed in a total of 105 Formula 1 races and finished on the podium eight times. His best season was 1977, when he finished sixth overall.
Success in endurance racing
After his Formula 1 career, Mass focused on endurance racing. In 1989, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Sauber-Mercedes, alongside Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens. He had previously competed successfully in Group C with Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.
Mentor and media personality
Mass was not only a successful racing driver, but also a valued mentor for young talent. Among other things, he supported Michael Schumacher in his entry into professional racing and recommended that he switch to Ferrari. After his active career, Mass worked as a TV expert for RTL and was a regular present at historic racing events such as the Mille Miglia and the Goodwood Revival.
Farewell to a Gentleman Racer
Jochen Mass passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 78 in Cannes from the effects of a stroke he suffered in February. He leaves behind his wife Bettina, two daughters, and two sons from his first marriage. With his passing, the motorsport world loses one of its most influential figures, who impressed not only with his driving skills but also with his personality.
