Some years ago I was playing Windows desktop chess against the computer, when I got a king and pawn endgame with all 16 pawns still on the board. Each pawn was stuck in position due to its opposite, and no captures were possible, while each king was trapped on their respective home side of this impenetrable line. So, even with all of that stuff on the board, this was a draw by insufficient material. But the computer understandably didn't recognize this in its databank, so I was still free to play—and indeed cursed to do so.

I thought the mate in 584 would be some sort of repetitive, algorithmic piece dance with pawn pushing where one side just delays the mate as much as possible. I was so shocked when I saw pieces flying around the board like a normal chess match. It looks like a normal chess match which just happened to go that long. Kind of gives me existential dread about how huge chess is.

FIDE actually introduced various exceptions to the 50-move rule throughout the 20th century, as specific endgames requiring more than fifty moves were discovered, but eventually (particularly after computer searches began in earnest) it became clear that there were far too many exceptions to be manageable. They fully reverted to the "vanilla" 50-move rule in 2001. Wikipedia has a pretty good account of the changes.

1:42 took me a while, but here's my solution:

On the previous move, the King couldn't have been on d4/e4/f4/d5/d6/e6/f6 because it cannot have moved from an occupied square and no extra piece placements could have blocked every attacking piece on these double-attacked squares so that the King is both covered and they are no longer there once the King moved to e5 (this includes quite a lot of considerations that would be too troublesome to write down here).

At first glance, f5 seems like it faces the same issue, but then I noticed that if White's last move before Kf5 to Ke5 were g2-g4 and Black's pawn were on f4, the white pawn and black pawn could have blocked both the Queen and the Bishop before fxg3+, Ke5 lead to the wanted position through En Passant (this wasn't too hard to come by because I'm familiar with puzzles were En Passant reveals a double-check).

However, this isn't quite the complete solution yet, for how did the Bishop get to h3 before g4 if g2 was blocked by the white pawn and the h3-c8 diagonal was where the white King was? The answer to this took some consideration, but it helped to realize that we can add one more black piece as long as it ends up captured on e5 by the white King at the end! Thus, if the black Knight were on g4, it would block in the Bishop that could have just entered there earlier in the game along the h3-c8 diagonal, and then you could play Ne5+, g4, fxg3+, Kxe5.

Even this isn't quite complete yet, though, for we have to make sure this position is possible. That is pretty simple and has multiple solutions, the easiest probably being that the white King started on e6 or g6, the black Rook moved from elsewhere on the d-file to d6 with a check, and the King entered f5. The position from there is obviously possible because there is enough room to comfortably maneuvre the pieces into said spots.

Phew, that was the toughest Chess puzzle I have solved in a while! Nice brain workout.
