The 155mm gun America tried to scrap became the weapon that cracked Hitler's Siegfried Line bunkers point blank.

In September 1944, American infantry stood frozen before the Westwall's concrete. Every gun they had failed. Then a machine the Army had declared unnecessary crawled out of the depots, a World War One French siege gun bolted onto a discarded tank chassis. What happened next rewrote the rules of fortress warfare. This is the full story of the M12 Gun Motor Carriage, the weapon its own crews called King Kong.

This documentary traces the M12 155mm self-propelled gun from its origins as the French Canon de 155 GPF of 1917 through its unlikely rebirth at Rock Island Arsenal, its rejection by Army Ground Forces, and its dramatic recall after the Normandy breakout. Few weapons in WWII history carry a stranger biography, and few proved more decisive against the Siegfried Line fortifications of 1944.

Along the way we examine the Westwall itself, the vast defensive belt built by Fritz Todt's organization between 1938 and 1940, the bitter fighting in the Stolberg corridor and the Battle of Aachen, and the direct-fire tactics the 991st and 987th Field Artillery Battalions improvised on the spot. Viewers interested in WWII artillery, the Siegfried Line campaign, or the First Army's advance into Germany will find the tactical and human detail here drawn from official records and veteran accounts.

We also follow the men whose decisions shaped the story: General Lesley McNair, who shelved the gun; General J. Lawton Collins, whose VII Corps unleashed it; and the German garrisons who learned that reinforced concrete could not stop a 95-pound shell arriving at over two thousand feet per second. The aftermath, the M40's arrival, and the single surviving M12 at Fort Sill close the account.
