In March nineteen forty four, American P-51 Mustangs appeared over Berlin, more than five hundred miles from their bases in England, with enough fuel to fight and fly home. Within months the Luftwaffe had a captured Mustang of its own. Test pilot Hans Werner Lerche flew it at the Rechlin test center, and the unit known as the Rosarius Circus toured captured Mustangs around German fighter bases in yellow paint. German engineers understood every part of the aircraft, yet they could never explain, in any way that helped them, how a single engine fighter had reached their capital and come back. This full length World War Two documentary follows the answer upstream, to a British purchase order in nineteen forty, the German born designer Edgar Schmued, the Rolls Royce Merlin engine and Stanley Hooker's two stage supercharger, Packard's production line in Detroit, the fuel tank behind the pilot's seat, paper drop tanks made in England, pilot training hours, and the oil campaign that grounded the German fighter force. Along the way it covers the Schweinfurt raids, Big Week, Jimmy Doolittle's order that freed the escorts, the first Berlin missions led by Don Blakeslee of the fourth Fighter Group, the diary of German pilot Heinz Knoke, and Adolf Galland's warnings to his own high command. If you enjoy WW2 stories, WW2 aviation history, the air war over Europe, the Eighth Air Force, the B-17 Flying Fortress, and the real history behind the P-51 Mustang, this film is for you.
