Here I show the techniques I use to begin a carving. Blocking out your carving gets everything in place and helps show what the final carving will look like ( of course, without any of the details)

This is Glenna Adams and I was the one in SDC who sold you the tools and saw you at the siminar at SDC each time you came. You are doing great and I have told several people about you and they have been watching you. Me too.

Thanks for all the tips. I just discovered your YouTube channel, I’ve found a lot of help from them. I want to get started again in carving. However I’m scared because they won’t be perfect. Thanks for the video on just carve and you’ll get better. That is encouraging!

I am new to carving & I just , sort of stumbled, on your video and I am so glad I did. Then I heard Doug Linker mention your name. I really enjoy & learn from your instruction. I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. I look forward to your next video. I would like to see how you create a cut out if you have the time to make a video on that. Thanks again.

Do you always use roughouts? Or do you start with a Blanc too?

@mikethomas5412 3 years ago

You may have answered this a million times, but do you make your rough outs? I'd love to see a video of that process.
Thanks.

I know that there is still a lot of skill remaining in the detail. However, I can't help thinking that buying a rough out is cheating. Why am I wrong? If I get done with something, good or no so much, I want to know that I made that.
