Welcome back to the Ultimate Higurashi Timeline series! Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Higurashi: When They Cry) has found us discussing the origin of Hanyuu Furude through Kotohogushi-hen, and how Rika Furude began to predict the future in Himatsubushi-hen. Last time we began to talk about the main series with Onikakushi-hen. Today we'll discuss Meakashi-hen and Watanagashi-hen, two arcs that focus mainly on the Sonozaki twins; Mion and Shion. These arcs received an absurd amount of cuts when adapted by Deen for the 2006 anime. So, we'll be filling in a LOT of gaps for everyone. Today, Keiichi Maebara once again finds himself caught in an unexpected mess following the disappearances of Tomitake Jirou and Miyo Takano, and he begins to doubt his friends Rena Ryuugu and Sonozaki Mion. Join me as we find out what horrors await us in this chapter of our time-looping story!
Welcome to a brand new series called the "Ultimate Higurashi Timeline," where once a month I will be going through every arc in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni catalogue. Whether the arc belongs to a console, or manga, or visual novel, or its anime only; I will be going through ALL of them, and deciding if they are either canon or non-canon by putting them into one, coherent timeline. The purpose of this series is to finally end any and all misinformation for the series by making it all readily available.

A huge thanks to Lambdadelto, for having uploaded all of Meakashi and Watanagashi to YouTube. Without their kind act of finding and making the story widely available, this video would have never been possible.
A special thanks to my friend Ryan for always reviewing the stuff I throw out and script, without him most of this videos would not exist. I'd also like to thank YandereTotodile for reviewing my script and giving me some ideas that I hadn't thought about before.
A big thank you to my friend West for making all of my channel artwork!

The clips for this video were predominantly from the Higurashi no naku koro ni visual novel, and some from the original Deen anime and the Passione anime Higurashi Gou.

In the manga version of Matsuribayashi, it's revealed Shion also felt guilty for Mion, since she (Shion) was the older sister and she was supposed to take over their family, but due to their switch, she pushed all the responsibilities to her younger sister (Mion).
edit: typo
It did somewhat help with his guilt knowing that despite everything he wasn't left of the hook but his friend is still there for him even if he did do something wrong.
Rena is really GOATED
With regards to the order of arcs that you talk about at the very end of the video, I think it's implied that besides Himatsubushi, each arc we see is the last one of that kind, and they unfold back to back in the specific order we see them. This is for sure the case with Tsumihoroboshi, Minagoroshi, and Matsuribayashi, because Rika wakes up in Matsuribayashi having no memory of Minagoroshi while Hanyuu does (her last memory is Tsumihoroboshi), likely a consequence of Hanyuu using up much of her remaining power to be physically present in Matsuribayashi.
I think Onikakushi is the last time Keiichi succumbs to the syndrome because of two things:
1. His monologue that opens the entire series in the visual novel expresses an extreme degree of remorse and confusion so powerful that he later recalls in Tsumihoroboshi, and his recollection of it sets off a chain reaction for the rest of the cast in the arcs following
2. There's a lot of meta commentary, especially in the final few arcs, about the audience's role in a game, and how we have to participate too in order for the game to be won. So I think starting with an Onikakushi that is implied to have ended differently from previous Onikakushis is a meta way of saying now that we, the audience, are present, the story can start coming to a close. I think this is kinda a thread Umineko digs more into???? Idk I haven't read it yet lol
With the other arcs (Tatarigoroshi and Watanagashi), it's not entirely clear what might be different in these final iterations compared to previous ones besides the fact that the audience is now present, but I do get the impression that overall, the arcs we see for the main story are in order and are the last of each that Rika experiences. Love the idea of the different adaptations being different iterations of the same arc tho, that's a really fun spin

Hello Everyone! It's been a SUPER long time coming, but here it is finally: the next timeline installment. Since I know some of you have been waiting extremely patiently for a very long time, and many people have commented that they wouldn't mind longer videos - I decided to make this one the biggest dive into any arcs for Higurashi I've done before. The other timeline videos will never be this long again (I hope not). Hopefully I am able to bring new info to the table for you, a new angle on something you maybe hadn't thought about before, or I'm able to help you remember how much you love the series. I have been very excited while making this one, and I certainly hope that you all can share that excitement with me.
The next timeline video HOPEFULLY will not be 2 years from now lol, it will come when it comes. Thank you all so much for your patience and support.
Also please please check out Hanami's storefront, they made some fantastic stuff that deserves to be shared: https://hanami63manga.storenvy.com/
