Vertigo is a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The story was based on the 1954 novel D'entre les morts (From Among the Dead) by Boileau-Narcejac, with a screenplay by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor. The film stars James Stewart as a former San Francisco police detective who has retired after an incident in the line of duty caused him to develop an extreme fear of heights, accompanied by vertigo. He is hired as a private investigator to report on the strange behavior of an acquaintance's wife (Kim Novak).

She didn't jump at the end. She was feeling guilty for the role in all this, and in the heated moment when the nun emerged from the shadoes, she mistook it for a ghost. She recoiled in horror, and slipped.

I first saw Verigo in a little theater downtown when it was re-released in 1983. The ending was such a shock. To add to the shock, seconds after the climax, the curtain closed, the doors opened, and all of us viewers were on the street in a minute, nerves still jangling. Walking down the sidewalk with a group of people saying, "WTF just happened?" is one of my most memorable moviegoing experiences.

The insane thing about this movie is how it goes from a ghost story mystery about Madeleine being possessed by the ghost of Carlotta, to a thriller about Scotty slowly losing his mind, and becoming obsessed over turning Judy into Madeleine. And the saddest part of all is how in the end, Judy pays the ultimate price for being a pawn in Gavin Elster's plot to murder his wife. She had no idea what allowing herself to try and continue her love affair with Scotty (version 2.0) was going to involve. Remember the old saying, "You reap what we sow!"

Just a simple story about a guy finally getting over his fear of heights. Five stars.

I love how the motif of a dead person haunting a living person changes from (apparently) literal with Madeleine’s obsession with Carlotta, to figurative with Scottie’s obsession with Madeleine. In the second half of the film he’s the one who is “possessed.”

Great reaction. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, Bernard Herrmann also did the music for Hitchcock's "Psycho," "North by Northwest" and other films as well as Orson Welles' "CItizen Kane." He was the best screen composer who ever lived. 2. The fades were a common editing method to indicate that time had passed between shots that otherwise would appear to be sequential. So they're used here to suggest that he's tailing her for hours and hours. 3. All of the locations are real places in San Francisco (except for the mission, which really is 100 miles south), and they even give "Vertigo" tours.

My take is that Scotty subconsciously knows that Judy is the woman he thought was Madeleine, and he’s bringing her back to life, even though it means that he fell in love with a fraud and an accomplice to murder.

I think when Midge paints the picture of herself as Carlotta, we are supposed to laugh. Midge is trying to wake Scotty up, but it backfires.

There is an alternative ending that was filmed but not used but you can find it on YouTube if you are interested.

I just discovered this movie two weeks ago. It blew my mind! Some people think it's just a "puzzle" movie but no, there's real human tragedy in it. Also, the formal tightness and connectedness is genius. I love when Scotty is spiraling through San Francisco in his car, for example. The colour! And so much more. Another symmetrical structure like Psycho... I could go on.

Everyone seems to forget what Scotty used to do for a living. He was a detective. Even though he is no longer working as a detective, his subconscious mind has figured out that there was something wrong with the way Madeline died. He continued to work it out. That was the point of the entire makeover. He was trying to work out the parts of Madeline's death that didn't make sense to his detective mind. And at the end, when he saw the necklace, he finally worked it out - that Judy was Madeline. And no, Judy didn't jump at the end. She was feeling guilty for her part in the death Elster's real wife, and when she saw the shadow of the nun, she backed up in horror. You will notice that the bell tower doesn't have a step up or railing to prevent people from just walking out and falling from the opening.

I very much liked your comments and reactions to "Vertigo." This film is considered to be one of Hitchcock's best films!

One more comment about the painting of Carlotta. It was commissioned for the movie. The inspiration was actress Vera Miles who was scheduled to play the role of Madeline/Judy. Miles' pregnancy forced Hitchcock to recast the film with Kim Novak but the portrait remained.

I'm glad you're here Deb.

One of the things I love about Alfred Hitchcock's direction is his devotion to the story. Whether he's blocking the actors or directing the camera, he's always looking to reinforce the story. The shot of Madeline in shadow standing beneath the grandeur of The Golden Gate Bridge is a great example. Hitchcock composes the shot so that our instinctive focus on Madeline as a character perfectly balances the power and majesty of the bridge, while also putting Madeline in shadow to convey her emotional state. I think you'd love Dial "M" For Murder. It's a wonderful crime drama. Or for something different from Hitch, try North By Northwest.

Jimmy Stewart was the Tom Hanks of the golden age of Hollywood 😊

The shock of her falling cured his vertigo

The painting of Carlotta was in the Palace of the Legion of Honor, a replica of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris. Some of the other locations: Fort Point, Mission Dolores, Muir Woods, Palace of Fine Arts, and Mission San Juan Batista.

The greatest art movie ever made. Hitchcock lived down the road to me. So would say that.

Hi Deb, I've been loving your reactions to you working your way through the Hitchcock classics, he's one of Hollywood's greats and his films are legendary. This is one of his very best and I highly recommend you react to another of his greatest hits: The Birds (1963) You've fast become my favourite Popcorn Roulette reactor, I'll look forward to more of your reactions :)

Ernies was the top formal dinner restaurant in San Francisco at the time. The scenes were shot at famous locations in the Bay Area. The view of Golden Gate Bridge from Old Fort Point is stunning! The Cypress tree where they first kissed was considered the most photographed tree in California.
