I see you have entered the rabbit hole that is OpenTTD.
Regarding city growth. The most useful tip I can give you is to avoid having road dead ends.
Reason is that every so often, a city or town will "try" to find a spot for a new house by following the roads. If it finds a dead end, the algorithm stops and you'll have to wait until the next try. However, if none of the roads ends, then it will try indefinetly until it does find a place for a house.

That game has so much potential.

Multi-track stations are a godsend. I highly recommend Master Hellish who's a fulltime OpenTTD content creator. But its cool to see what you were able to do without really knowing what you were able to do not knowing the inner tricks of how the game works. To optimize everything. It's fun to just play the game cause it's fascinating how you can really just play however you want. It's just an open world to play with and do whatever you want.

The biggest complaint most people have is that once you get past the first struggle of not making enough money you kinda have to just make your own goals. But hey, that's the beauty of the game.

I love how you sound like the guy from storage wars going with the prices. Do I see 300, 350? 400 for the gentleman in the back!

The town grows randomly depending on the algorithm applied to it, as in some grow like planned urban or in some grows like a branching road tree (it's also a form of downloadable mods that can be enabled before starting a new game). Town can't go grow any faster than the max cap allowed.

Diesel train on an electrified track doesn't have any problem, an electric train on a normal track will have a problem and will not able to move. Train break down relies on reliability, the lower it is the often it breaks and costs time stuck.
Trains won't crash when it comes out of the Depot, it has an internal signal built in that checks if the track ahead is reserved or not. It's the signals on the track that needs to check its orientation.

It's the noise pollution limit as each Airport costs a certain number in noise, it can be tweaked in the settings.

From videos on youtube that did the same challenge - the main growth factor was starting with 5 bus stops and building a road grid of 3x3. The town would grow much faster if you simply stretch streets into each direction. I started the same scenario in as yours, 1950 with a town that was slightly bigger, 89 people. By year 1978 my town grew to 8,800 people, I did invest twice in small advertising and once to medium. (8 busses and 2 trains). Everyone is trying to basically get the highest city population in 100 years (most started the game in 1930, before trains, just buses). I guess try again with investing in roads and see if that changes the population growth.

I just tried the same idea but used only buses and mail trucks. Built way too many roads but it was a profitable success after hitting about 1200 population in 9 years. Key thing you’re missing is 5 distinct stations in your town.  This triggers extra growth. I just setup a quick 3x3 grid system and populated bus and truck stations.

Once the city is large enough I usually build bidirectional railroads (2 parallel lanes) and large multiline train  stations to be able to service all the commuters. Inside the city I use high-capacity multi-car trams and use them to carry more people to the train stations. As the city is growing I like to pre-build a road grid for houses to grow into.. I think it makes it grow faster and I can then easily build new bus&tram stations as needed.

When i was little i always liked when modern buildings started appearing. Especially the colourful cube ones.

Build your HQ at the start to generate a bit of extra growth.
