I was basically done for the day and ready to pack up. I told myself I’d just move one last rock before heading out. That one rock changed everything. Right underneath it was the richest gold vein I’ve ever come across.
What makes it even more interesting is that the ground had already been hinting at something unusual. Early in this dig I started uncovering gold that looked completely different from what I'd been finding here before. I’d started picking up pieces of crystallized gold that weren’t even locked inside quartz. One of them was almost like a solid little nugget on its own - probably around 2 grams. Then I found another and more and more gold started showing up.
I’ve spent a lot of time chasing gold, and I’d never seen crystallized gold like this up here just sitting loose in the ground, outside the quartz. At that point, there was no way I was leaving. I fired the detector back up and kept digging.
Finding loose natural gold and crystallized pieces on their own is exciting enough, but actually tracing it back to the source (the vein it’s coming from) is a completely different feeling.
This is exactly why I love gold prospecting and hard-rock mining. You can spend hours digging, detecting, breaking rock and second-guessing everything you’re doing… and then one moment, one rock, changes the entire story.
This hard-rock project is very much still alive.

I’ve been chasing gold since I was 11 years old. I’ve sold natural gold, nuggets, rare specimens and paydirt since 1999. Nowadays I'm lucky that I get to follow my dreams and mine full time. My hands-on experience spans gold prospecting, hard-rock mining, metal detecting, gold recovery, ore processing and crystallized gold specimens. I've also appeared on National Geographic’s Meltdown, demonstrating how gold recovery works in the real world.
On this channel, I follow gold from the first signal on the metal detectors to the final result - discovering pockets and veins, extracting gold-bearing quartz, testing equipment and recovery methods, crushing and processing ore, cleaning specimens and establishing what the recovered gold actually weighs and what makes a natural specimen valuable.
If you watch gold mining, gold prospecting, gold panning, metal detecting, ore processing or gold recovery, subscribe for real discoveries, measured results and the complete story behind the gold!
