I bought a US$100,000 fishing boat that’s nearly a century old. The restoration isn’t finished, but we’re going sailing, and taking the work with us.
Lady Hawk is 85 feet long and weighs 85 tons. After months of rebuilding, we’re taking her on our first extended voyage together along the coast of British Columbia. We’re supporting a sailing race, continuing the restoration, and learning to operate this enormous old wooden ship as a crew. On paper, those things fit together just fine.
Leaking decks, a thunderstorm, repairs underway, night passages and a blockade of whales soon give us a different perspective.
The bigger plan is to return Lady Hawk to commercial service, sail to Mexico, and bring a cargo hold full of tequila home to Canada under sail. This voyage is the rehearsal.
We thought we’d accounted for the things that could go wrong. But knowing about the planning fallacy doesn’t stop you finding yourself in the middle of it.
