Howard Ritchie takes a closer look at the Jaecoo 8, one of the most ambitious Chinese SUVs to arrive in the UK.
At around £45,000, the Jaecoo 8 is going up against cars that can cost considerably more, yet it comes loaded with an extraordinary amount of equipment.
And well done if you spotted this in the video: https://hongxin.uk/ Lovely food.
There’s 428hp, four-wheel drive, a sophisticated hybrid system, six or seven seats, luxurious Nappa leather captain’s chairs, heating, cooling, massage and zero-gravity seating, adaptive suspension, torque vectoring and more than 700 miles of combined engine and battery range.
It is also roughly the size of a Mercedes GLE, but costs around £30,000 less.
So what exactly do you get for your money?
Howard looks at the Jaecoo 8 inside and out, including its enormous interior, 2,019-litre boot, seven-seat practicality, premium cabin, technology, head-up display, panoramic roof, 12-speaker audio system and some of the unusual features that you simply don't expect to find at this price.
Then there's the driving.
With 428hp and 580Nm of torque, the Jaecoo 8 can reach 60mph in around 5.8 seconds, while its adaptive suspension and all-wheel-drive system are designed to make this huge SUV comfortable as well as quick.
But there are questions too.
How good is the ride? How quiet is it? Does all this technology actually work as well as it should? What is the ownership experience likely to be like? And, perhaps most importantly, does a £45,000 Chinese SUV really belong in the same conversation as much more expensive German and Swedish luxury SUVs?
Jaecoo is still a relatively new name in Britain, and that raises another question.
Does the badge matter anymore?
If a car gives you this much equipment, performance, space and technology for considerably less money, would you actually care where it was made?
Howard Ritchie finds out exactly what the Jaecoo 8 is like and asks whether this could be the beginning of a very different kind of luxury car.
