Before the discussion began, Academician Khristo Periklovich Takhchidi, Director of the Ophthalmology Research Center at the N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, showed us images of one of his patients' pathologies on a computer screen. In some images, the retina was severely damaged, practically torn. In others, we saw a completely normal retina. Until recently, such a thing would have been impossible. People with retinal damage were doomed to live with this condition for the rest of their lives. What has been accomplished today under the leadership of Academician Kh.P. Takhchidi seems like science fiction. We discuss how this became possible, the prospects it opens, and what lies ahead for ophthalmology.
