Reviewing The QUANSHENG TG-FR1 - Is It Worth Your Money?

I test the brand new Quansheng TG-FR1 pmr446 walkie talkie pair — unboxing, sound test, range, CTCSS, VOX, scan & that crazy-bright torch. Is this £35 licence-free pair worth it? My honest 8.5/10 verdict inside.

This is my full walkie talkie test of the quansheng tg-fr1 — a legal 0.5W pmr446 handheld with 16 channels for the UK & Europe, Type-C charging, removable lithium pack + AAA backup, and a colour screen you can actually read in daylight. I cover what's in the box, size (148mm), glove-friendly knob, how to change channels, CTCSS privacy codes, VOX hands-free, scan mode to find locals on Channel 12 in Blackpool, torch demo, realistic range (0.5-1km town / 2-3km open), and 3-level audio test.

Would I spend my own money on it?

The wrist lanyards are great when hiking. You wont appreciate them until you drop your radio. So I'm saving you the bother of finding out the hard way 😂

I have just bought a Retevis Ailunce HA2 as part of a disater kit and I have no idea how to use it .. there are no videos on Yourtube that show a beginner like me the basics of how to use it .. I am working as we speak on getting my basic ham license so I can press that PPT button .. I love your channel and I think you are the man for the job of explaining how we can communicate when armageddon happens .. I have been putting a kit together that includes communication capability .. keep doing what you do .. you are awesome ..

You are correct Dave, this one is blue.

the ctcss does not stop people from hearing you it stops them talking to you most modern hand held radios have a ctcss scan feature so it really easy to find what tone you are using

@aeroplanespotterstv6868 1 day ago

PmR not licensed free in America it has to be FRS ones

@PHILG2864 1 day ago (edited)

Nicely presented video, but @14:24 sorry but I think you misunderstand ctcss, anyone with ctcss configured the same as yours can hear you, but crucially anyone with ctcss disabled can too.
CTCSS doesnt make your transmission private, its purely a means of preventing the receive squelch opening unless it receives the correct code. With ctcss disabled a receiver will hear all transmissions on the channel, regardless of whether the sender has ctcss set or not on that channel. The default, as supplied, is ctcss disabled on all 16 channels, and so out of the box, they will receive all transmissions whether the sender has ctcss set or not. In no way is it a 'security' feature :)

ctss - think of the radio squelch being set to 100%, the ctss code opens the squelch on your radio to allow the signal to be transmitted / received, but the transmitted signal is still public to other radio users, and they can also setup their radios by setting up the ctss to also receive your transmissions

The antenna is shorter than your Maylawns so it's likely that the range of the Quansheng will be less than that of the Maylawns.

I had something comparable - the Motorola T72. They were £55 the pair but couldn't equal the range of my £26 a pair Retevis RT24s. They audio was very good though, which is presumably reflected in the cost.

I passed them on to a building surveyor friend who finds them great for team contact in large buildings or sites.

Somebody with no ctcss activated can listen to al channel convs. Those codes are useful in scenarios like a construction site for example where you only want to hear your team. If the whole team uses the ctcss tone 5 for example, their radios will only listen to than tone and ignore any other conversations happening on that channel. Its not a security encoding features, its like a filter, you filter out and do not hear anyone on the same channel not using the same tone. But they CAN hear you. Its just a filter…

@andrewagner2035 1 day ago

CCTSS provides no security. A person not using CCTSS can monitor all conversations with or without CCTSS. It’s purely a convenience thing, so you don’t get disturbed by other conversations.

@Aletsch 1 day ago

Yup.. based on aesthetics alone, really not in to those - very toy like, cheap looking, and garish. The BF88E makes for a far nicer bare minimum feature set fully compliant PMR handset for handing to the casuals. (seems it can be chirped to 3W too, if needed).

@CTRL0LDEL 1 day ago

CTCSS tones being marketed as providing privacy is misleading. It's more a Do Not Disturb setting.

If you don't have a CTCSS tone set, you hear everything on that channel, including transmissions that do have a CTCSS tone.
The CTCSS is more like a filter to only open the squelch when someone has the same CTCSS tone.

Think of it like a conversation in a crowded room. Everyone can overhear you talking to someone else (because they don't have a CTCSS tone set) while at the same time you can try to cancel out everything but the conversation you're currently in (using a CTCSS tone you share with the person(s) you're talking to).
