◼︎ The folktale known as ‘Foolish Ondal and Princess Pyeonggang’ is not merely a simple love story, but the true story of General Ondal of Goguryeo from actual history. Ondal, who was of poor and humble origins, honed his martial skills after marrying Princess Pyeonggang, distinguished himself in war, and rose to become a rising power, eventually becoming a key general of Goguryeo. He marched out to reclaim the territories in the Gyeripnyeong and Jukryeong regions lost to Silla, and ultimately died in the Battle of Ondal Fortress. Recorded not as a ‘fool’ but as a loyal subject and war hero, his life was a history that embodied the Goguryeo people’s aspirations for social advancement and their fervent desire to reclaim their homeland.
