My piecing/quilting mojo has succumbed to knitting. If you haven’t heard of Kate (Last Homely House on YouTube) you may enjoy her prior episodes where she talks about all kinds of learning about fabric. Beautiful! So great to see your journey! The choice of fabric and colours is beautiful. I was intrigued by quilting many years ago, but never got to it. Never bought a sewing machine either. I’m happy for you that you have the time and space to start this new craft 🙂 I’ll just stick to knitting, crochet, violin, gardening, and call that enough hobbies to combine with a full time job and family of 4 🤪

After making several quilts and giving them as gifts I have found that machine sewing the binding on the front and hand sewing it on the back gives a perfect finish. Hobbycraft sells quilting cotton which is thicker than regular thread! Erica Arndt is an amazing quilter who has loads of tutorials to learn from!! ❤️

Well done on your first quilt, I think you have done a great job of it, and its so refreshing to have someone show the 'not quite right' bits and be ok with it.  I have been making a 1 inch hexagon quilt by hand for over 10 years, I just pick it up when I feel the need to hand sew and it takes no time to add a hexi.  I was watching another youtuber make a little pair of curtains with a diamond shape and it looked gorgeous, I went and bought a template but haven't done anything as yet....look forward to your next make

I admire your attitude of just jumping in and not being too precious about everything being perfect! And can completely relate to struggling to parent when I am absorbed in a project! Wonderful that you have successfully cut, pieced, sewn and quilted your FIRST quilt!!! It is fabulous! I hand sewed my first quilt and have never tried machine quilting but you inspired me! I think knitting and quilting go hand in hand!!!! Hint: maybe try using 100% cotton fabrics…I find they are much nicer to sew also you NEED a LARGE cutting mat and a proper rotary cutter and a long straight edge. Proper tools are just the best!

Congrats on your first quilt!! Study up on which needles are best for specific fabrics-that will help with the stitching. Microtex needles are most versatile.
A thicker or sharper needle is used for different types of fabric.

Laura I’m so stoked that you started sewing! I just started sewing five months ago and you progress quickly in skill level. You’ll be making your own clothing in no-time. It’s also a great break for our knitting hands😂

You did brilliantly ❤. I love the method you used to create the half square triangles, it’s a great quick way of creating a batch of them and now I’ve found it the only one I use.  
Missouri star quilt company is very popular with quilters and has some lovely tutorials. I love creating the sew may squares quilts, I have done several.  I have ditched machine quilting and now hand quilt all of mine.  It may be slower buts it’s so medative and as a knitter I think it would appeal to you.  If you try it buy a reel of gutterman  hand quilting thread, it is lovely.  Enjoy hyper focus x

Try facing rather than binding .. I find it’s easier and I love how it frames the reverse side.  Keep going Laura. Watch Kate at the last homely house… she’s bloody brilliant x
