Dragon Quest builders takes place specifically in a DQ1 where the Hero accepts the dragonlord's offer. He's a villain in that game called the king of darkness and looks like Robbin' Ood with a crown

Great review! I recently was looking back at Final Fantasy and found your REFFOID reviews and been binging them. Great to see you start another legendary series!

Worth noting in the NES game you also carry the Princess on the overworld after rescuing her and it was the most charming thing in the world to me and my friends when we played through it a couple years ago. Seems like one of those details they added in this remake, but it's miraculously a holdover from the usually very basic original!

I also haven't played a dragon quest . But I will sometimes .

No joke, HD2D remake turned 2 from the most middling, borderline unfinished game in the series into legit one of the best.

34:45 As one of your ancestors, (I'm 47) the original is always great nostalgia, but this is truly AMAZING.

Dragon Quest is such an interesting series as it's the grandfather of JRPGs, it's one of the biggest reasons for Final Fantasy's existence. I hope that you're able to see how this trilogy inspired every other turn-based rpg from Japan,

This is a very well worded and researched review, as a somewhat long time fan of the series I really appreciated it. Its rare to see such informed 'first time impresson'. Keep it up, great content!

As a note, its sort of a series staple to have moves with unknown triggers/outcomes. In DQ11 you have pep powers and you're never straight up told what is the trigger for them, and each character has their own unique way to raise the hidden meter. The fact that DQ1 HD (eventually) tells you its not only about being at half health is a pretty major concession.
