Before refrigerators, a wooden cabinet could keep food cool—but only if someone brought ice to the door. How did that block reach an American kitchen, and what happened when it melted?

This historical documentary follows the icebox from a New York household to the winter harvest at Rockland Lake. Workers cut and stored ice, then sent it by rail and barge toward the city. Ice delivery made it possible for families to keep milk, butter, and leftovers cool between meals, but every block was a supply that had to be replaced.

As ice plants and mechanical refrigerators changed how cold was produced, American homes did not all change at once. Some families bought new appliances; millions continued using iceboxes or had no refrigerating equipment at all.
