What if waking up in the middle of the night used to be completely normal?
In this video, we step into a medieval English village to uncover a forgotten winter rhythm: two-part sleep, midnight “watch” hours, hearthside work, alewives, spinning, pottage, feast days, and the intense community life that carried people through the darkest season.
From Roger Ekirch’s research on “first sleep” and “second sleep” to the harsh realities of the Little Ice Age, this is a look at how ordinary medieval people actually lived when the fields froze and the nights grew long. Far from being a season of idleness, winter was a world of work, ritual, storytelling, brewing, repair, and survival.
If you love immersive history, forgotten daily life, and the hidden logic of the medieval world, this one is for you.

They wake up in the middle of the night and pray and do other religious stuff and then go back to sleep!
They have a special calendar that contains all the times of what the sun’s position is and at night too!
Their fasting month is every year on a different date and this the month where they wake up at night and eat their meals and pray and do other religious rituals and then go back to bed!
It’s a very structured life but also natural somehow
