Thematically it works because the first time voldemort was defeated was from a mother's love the second time voldemort gets defeated was because of true love and made more compelling because it was from enemies who became lovers that defeated the living embodiment of hatred, it would've been a full circle moment and matched perfectly of harry potter's theme about love and friendship.

This moment has been the culmination of more than two decades worth of fandom, fanfics and fanart. All it needed was a spark to set the internet ablaze.

"I get it now"
Indeed

You know. Malfoy's wand not necessarily changing allegiance, but rather recognizing it being wielded by the wizard its owner fell in love with is just one of many, many, many perfect bows that are tied off as a result of the change. And then you add both Harry and Malfoid holding the wand together to take down Voldemort.

.... man. It's perfect storytelling.

The beauty of this trend is the sheer explosion of creativity, fanarts, fancomics, fanfics, EVEN FANANIMATIONS. An OBSCENE quantity of ideas erupting out of pure passion, it truly is gorgeous! A BILLION POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR!!!

Basically Romeo and juliet

The Girl who Loved the Boy who Lived. Damn that line goes hard

It's crazy how much swapping Malfoy's gender and turning him into a love interest elevates ever aspect of the story.
- you give Harry a nuanced and interesting relationship compared to what we got with Ginny
- Gives a perfect full circle conclusion to Voldemort's character having him first lose to the love Harry's mom had for him and then losing to true love between Harry and Malfoy
- Makes Slytherin a far more interesting house rather than just being relegated to the "bad guys"
- You could also go more in depth with Draco's relationships with the other characters like having her develop warm up to Hermione who she saw as a mud blood or even Doby

Im amazed at how fast this has spread. I don't even care for Harry Potter and I'm loving all the art.

JK was THIS close to striking literally the most peak thematically important love story to ever be written.

this is a perfect storm
as someone put it "this appeals to so many people simultaneously. to 'enemies to lovers', 'romeo&juliet', 'step on me mommy', 'lady&the tramp', 'slowburn romance' and ofc to tsundere enjoers and 'holy shit this makes so much sense'

just fucking imagine the payoff at the end

Enemies to Lovers is a trope that demands a slow burn for it to be effective. And authors tend to be way to impatient to give it the time it needs to develop properly.

It's kinda wild then that the best Enemies to Lovers story ever written happens to be a genderswap fanfic of a 20 year old series where you only gender swapped the school bully side character and made them main love interest.

As a side note, I do like the idea that Draco (Malfoid in this case) gets involved in Voldemort's fall in this way. It's not only a redemption for herself and her family, but Slytherin as a whole. Logically speaking there is literally zero reason why Slytherin as a house should exist considering it seemingly can only produce people that are at best of dubious morals, if not outright evil. The only way to feel like Slytherin was "redeemed" is if someone from Slytherin broke the cycle of evil Slytherin has produced. What better way than to be instrumental in the Dark Lord's defeat?

This trope needs time to establish a rivalry, time to establish both characters’ importance and impact on the story outside of each other, time to establish the friction in their relationship, time to establish nuance in their lives as not solely good and evil, time to establish both characters as growing closer and further apart and closer again due to their rivalry and friction, time to establish the rival as an actual antagonistic threat that pisses off the audience, and time to establish redemption.

Time, and the story’s ability to make use of that time to give all the necessary attention to the romantic-rivalry dynamic is everything Potter x Malfoy had due to decades of time the community had to digest the story. Recontextualizing the story with Malfoy as a tsundere woman was the only missing piece to the puzzle, as in inadvertently gave a richer depth of nuance to Malfoy’s character and the motivations behind their goals, and thus leant the character more personal agency through rivalry motivated by romance.

In a lot of ways, it actually better completes Malfoy as a character, and makes Potter more interesting because the story around them becomes richer in the new context.

It's been so fun seeing men find fun in fanfics with this pairing honestly. Having so much fun just watching people have fun with it even if I've never read HP in my life 😂

The one magic Voldemort could not defeat is love. Malfoid andHarry defeating Voldemort together ties the end of Harry Potter to the beginning!

It is strangely more thematically than consistent than the canon!

What I get so strongly out of this trend is it appeals to alot of my favourite romance tropes and even an appreciation for ones I'm not as big on.

I adore hot and cold romances, slow-burns, enemies/rivals to lovers and any kind of romantic story that sees both parties be thrusted one way and back in a tug of war that reflects the changing story around them, like the hero's desire to save the once enemy they can see is actually in need of a positive connection or the villain realizing what they thought was hate, was actually jealousy of the hero's freedom and a desire to share in the light they never got to have until the hero offered a path.

It's also a strong example of how love, care and a willingness to mature can bring anyone together, be it as friends or something more.

Also the biggest thing, it's a trend that shows how one spark can light the fires for many creative minds.

He's beginning to yearn again....
I remember when I was much younger, iirc my mother said Drako behaves more like a teenage girl than a male school bully. I didn't get it then, but it actually makes sense seeing as he's based off of the bullies J.K experienced.

“You know, I know this girl doesn't exist. I know that when I look at her, the dopamine is telling my brain that she’s cute and lovable. After three decades on the internet, you know what I realize?”
posts another Malfoid meme
“Ignorance is bliss.”

It works because it doesn't defy all logic and doesn't ask the reader to pretend the "rival" to the hero is somehow a good person in the end and that they'll somehow have a wholesome and loving relationship with someone with more warcrimes under their belt than Anakin bloody Skywalker. It also doesn't feature literal SA, which many "romance" stories do all the damn time. Malfoy was already far more of a product of nurture than nature in the original story, very clearly not being fully on board with all the evil craziness. Which is why he wouldn't actually kill Dumbledore when coming face to dace with him. He knew he'd die if he didn't, and yet, when he finally got the chance, he couldn't. It's also why he didn't rat Harry out in the Malfoy manor. He's never been in love with him or anything, but he's never been this utter monster they always presrnt you with when writing an original "enemies to lovers", which ends up reading like a textbook on the Stockholm syndrome. It's not that female Draco Malfoy has all the perfect requirements for enemies to lovers, it's that she doesn't have the insane flaws that usually make the story completely insane.

Female Malfoy is the one last single puzzle to make HarryPotter from a 9/10 to 11/10. It just makes sense from every angle.

I see now why it feels like a trope and yet I can’t think of any examples. It’s because no story have been brave enough or good enough to successfully deliver what we all know is possible.

Draecana Malfoy is my canon.
