I bought a small jar of it from my local grocery story and spread it thickly like Nutella on a toast. Boy, was it a wrong idea ever...

They've certainly improved over the past 20 years.

We had these as cadets when I was a teen. The life savers are it. Mixing the cheese into some of the meals is a definite recommendation

My instruction to non-Aussies is to use a slight scratching of Vegemite on a slice of toast or bread to start with, until you build up tolerance. That tube will do me for two slices of toast. Kiwis will probably prefer Marmite to Vegemite. Both are made from yeast, and there is also Bonox, which is made from beef. You can add Vegemite to a pot of stew or soup for a salty umami kick. It makes a great pairing with that canned cheese, with cheese and Vegemite sandwiches getting high rotation in school lunches.

Those jam biscuits are Arnott's Raspberry Shortcake biscuits, or their equivalent in New Zealand, made by Griffins, as someone else has mentioned.

Those tuna sachets also come with tomato sauce, chilli with lemon, and other flavour variants.

Go to a camping store. I think OrifO makes something similar to that fruit bar if you're looking for something a little more nutritious with less sugar than a fruit roll-up for your daughter. OrifO is Danish, and you see their products in a lot of Western European rations, except Norway, which uses its own brand, Real.

Malaysian curry is an adaptation of a basic Indian curry by the Malays and Chinese in Malaysia. Fairly mild, if you like eating spicy food. Do you have a Malaysian restaurant near you? If you want to get out of your comfort zone, go in there for a meal. Talk to the boss or the chef, and get them to describe menu items.

It's a bugger that the chocolate has spoiled. It's supposed to be dairy milk.

CR1Ms weigh 1.2 to 1.6 Kg- 2.6 to 3.5 pounds.

You want weird Aussie food? Make a hamburger with "the lot". Beef patty, bacon, fried egg, grilled pineapple, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, sliced canned beets, and either tomato sauce/ketchup or barbecue sauce.

those lamb curry packets are available at australian camping equipment stores for about 20 bucks, fantastic with white rice and a bit of mango pickles (achar).

Vegemite really thinly with cheese on top on the cream crackers would be yum! That’s something that we would actually eat at school for recess back in the day. Salada crackers (essentially the same thing as what you’re eating) and if you squished it together gently the Vegemite comes out the tiny little holes like worms - was fun as a kid!

the jam biscuit is better known locally as a 'Shrewsbury'. Get a packet of them often. Back in the '80's with a rat pack you would get a bar of Cadbury military chocolate, i think the same stuff was sold in the shops as 'energy' chocolate. They used to have a tube of liquid honey as well, beautiful stuff it was. The meals have sure improved from a tin of meat and vegie stew.

Always enjoy the rare reviews of these Australian rations. Lots of cool stuff, and the "jammy dodgers" are worth the price. I am saving up for one of these soon. Really enjoy your style.
