Morning begins at Kai Ka Ta Lert Ros, with a plate of hot fried eggs and French bread, served on a Vietnamese-style aluminum tray. Steam rises, and Chiang Mai slowly wakes up with it.

Then I drift into Chiang Mai Gate Market, where vendors call out, spices scent the air, and smiles pass between old acquaintances. Together they make up the truest pulse of this small northern Thai city. I'm in no hurry. I linger in the crowd, watching local people's ordinary days, and learning what it feels like to belong.

At noon, I stop at a 7-Eleven near Wat Chet Yot: seafood fried rice with a steamed egg, and that's lunch. Living like a local was never about extravagant feasts. One humble pairing can be enough to leave you full in body and spirit.

Of course, a visit to Wat Chet Yot is a must. Amid its solemn, ancient stillness, my heart settles into quiet.

As the sun sets, the night market lights flicker on. The sharp, spicy tang of raw pickled crab and the smoky warmth of a few grilled skewers close the day on a note that is lively, yet deeply grounding.

No tourist today, just a day as a Chiang Mai local. May you, too, find a slow time of your own in this city.
