We bought a cheap BMW 420d non-runner with an M4 replica body kit, and the plan was to repair it, modify it and flip it for a profit. This BMW 4 Series looked like a bargain, but it quickly became one of our biggest BMW repair projects yet.
The BMW 420d was blowing blue smoke, had a serious turbocharger problem and had oil throughout the intercooler system. We had to diagnose the fault, remove the failed turbo and carry out a full turbo replacement before we could get this BMW 4 Series running properly again.
Once the turbo replacement was complete, we moved onto DPF cleaning, an engine oil change, an oil filter change and an air filter replacement. With the BMW diesel engine running again, we then turned our attention to the cosmetic damage and started repairing the M4 replica front bumper.
This BMW flipping project was not just about getting the car running. We wanted to improve the car and make it more desirable to a future buyer. We fitted an upgraded steering wheel, Apple CarPlay and other BMW modifications to modernise the interior of the 420d.
After putting all this work into the BMW 420d, we thought we had successfully repaired the non-runner and created a profitable car flip. Unfortunately, the story took another turn when we discovered a potentially serious engine knock.
The engine noise could potentially be related to a common problem associated with the M47 engine, leaving us with a difficult decision. Do we attempt an engine swap and continue the BMW build, or cut our losses and sell the car?
