Microsoft has filed a patent for a system designed to show ads inside PC and console games during natural breaks in gameplay. Instead of interrupting you randomly, the system would wait for moments like finishing a boss fight, completing a quest, reaching a loading screen, or ending a cutscene. The game could then pause, show you an advertisement, and give you another block of ad-free playtime after you watch it.
Right now, this is only a patent and Microsoft has not announced plans to bring the system to Xbox games. But the idea alone is already getting attention because it sounds a lot like mobile gaming monetization moving into traditional console and PC games. In this video, we’re looking at Microsoft’s gaming ad patent, Xbox ads, in-game commercials, ad-supported gaming, and what this type of system could mean for the future of Xbox, Game Pass, and gaming monetization.

On a separate note, this isn't new either. Mobile games have been playing ads between levels for many years by this point.
If they are granted this patent, I see no way this will stand up in court.
