Discord’s age verification system is officially back. Earlier this year, Discord delayed its global rollout after users pushed back over privacy concerns surrounding facial scans, ID verification, and third-party verification companies. Now Discord has launched a redesigned system that automatically estimates whether an account belongs to an adult or teenager using account-level signals, with Discord saying more than 90% of users should never need to manually verify their age.
But the controversy obviously didn’t disappear. If Discord can’t confidently determine your age, certain users may still be asked to verify before accessing age-restricted content or changing specific safety settings. Discord has added more verification options and says facial age estimation must happen on-device, but after the previous backlash and a third-party breach that potentially exposed ID photos and selfies belonging to tens of thousands of users, people are understandably asking whether Discord finally got age verification right or just found a different way to roll it out.
