New Jersey, Delaware, D.C., and Pennsylvania are part of the Mid‑Atlantic region. It’s one of those touchy points for us native New Englanders — we guard those borders pretty fiercely.
For some reason, New York and New Jersey have been trying to hitch themselves to New England for decades. I’m not sure why — they’re great in their own right — but they’re not part of our region. And for those of us who actually are native New Englanders, that distinction matters more than people realize.
I’m not sure I can call myself a proud American anymore, but I’m still a proud New Englander. That part of my identity hasn’t gone anywhere — the history, the culture, the sense of place. New England still feels like home in a way the rest of the country doesn’t.
Just 2 hours west of Boston Western Mass is incredibly unique as well.

Erudite British actor and stand-up comedian Stephen Fry starts his idiosyncratic tour of the USA like mainstream immigration and pioneering, on the East Coast, in New York. He tastes both the capital Washington D.C. and the Yankee countryside. He searches for vestiges of the Civil War but also meets Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and similar worldwide-user-run websites.
