Water Casting: A Silversmithing Tutorial

This video shows how to do water casting, a type of free form casting. The process requires a hot torch, a crucible, scrap silver, safety equipment for your protection, and a deep bucket of water. For the final piece of jewelry I produced, I also used, I used 16 (1.3 mm) and 18 gauge (1 mm) sterling round wire, 22 gauge (.66 mm) sterling sheet, and some 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge (.41 mm), cut shorter. I added a 6x4 mm Blue Topaz as an accent. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and a liquid flux although I used a bit of medium paste solder at the end.

Hi Chad, I was actually searching for pewter water casting when I found you, being impatient, I skipped over some of your intro talk and I couldn't understand why it was taking you so long to to melt the metal with a hot torch like that. What you have done is very interesting and I like the love the idea of free form shapes. I've seen some really good water cast pewter forms, but my own efforts, so far, haven been very interesting. I've tried poring (pewter) from high and low and the high pours seem to produce well fragmented results, almost like wire wool, no use at all!! The low pours tends to make disc shapes, a bit like the piece that you used for the pendant on this silver piece. As an aside, many years ago I designed an induction heating system for producing round shot. Metal was melted and dropped down a very , very tall, narrow tube into water. The tube was filled with soap bubbles, there was a air pump at the bottom of the tube making the bubbles. The idea was that surface tension formed the shot into a ball and the little bit of progressive cooling as the shot travelled down the tube cools the metal maintained the ball shape, so that by the time it hit the water it was hard enough not to deform. I might have a play doing something similar to gain some sort of control over the cooling of pewter. I don't want to make balls, but maybe there might be something interesting to be seen. I'm guessing I'd need something longer that 5 foot, depending on the density of the bubbles. Man I do get distracted, but there are so many things I want to play with. All the very best.

Hey Chad, loved seeing your creations. I have bee; doing this for some time now. I always add some borax to the metal when I melt it, it helps with the impurities.

Beautifull piece Chad. Without the stone, it would look like something and nothing. So special. As a beginner to silversmithing, I was just wondering if any of those moulten pices which are not usable, could be melt again with other bits, to make a larger piece?
