I live in Green River Wyoming and it is always a real joy to see Big Boy 4014 role into town as it did many years ago. The sound of the steam whistle ,the sound that the locomotive makes, the smoke coming out of the stack, is really something special, and the feeling is you get is hard to describe. Thanks to all involved that preserved this special locomotive 🚂

Union Pacific took delivery of a locomotive that weighed one point two million pounds, stretched one hundred thirty three feet long, and was built to do something no single engine had ever done before.

I have always lived in the area these were needed.  I remember seeing one as a young child.  Then when in my 70's, 4014 stopped by and I got a closer look!

What a great story!  American engineers are so talented to build the Big Boy, and then  bring it back to life after 60 years, and make it run on fuel-oil. That's a great idea. It makes me wonder why they didn't think of running it on fuel oil in the first place. It's a beautiful machine — by far the best looking steam locomotive you could ever see. I'm so glad to see these dedicated people did all this wonderful work to make it run again.  :hand-orange-covering-eyes:

My father worked as a mail guard on that stretch of rail in the early 50s from Ogden to Helper 😮

What big boy does is, carry history with it. Union Pacific for whatever reason restored this peace of history and I for one am very thankful. I’m grateful to say that I saw big boy in wagoner Oklahoma on one of its tours. My only regret is that my grandkids weren’t there to see it with me. Truly a sight to see.

Big Boy is a work of art

I will turn 85 next month and have moved across the country from New England to California then back again. First to Alameda where we lived in The Projects and dad was frozen in his job “For the duration” as a machinist. At some point mom and I went back to New England, stopping off to visit her father in Chicago and VJ Day happened with a big celebration and then, in 1946 mom and I again went by train, this time to Los Angeles where dad was working nights at Railway Express and spending days looking for acting jobs. That hotel was horrible and mom once again packed me up for a train trip back home. Long story short I got to travel four times across country by train, dad came back in ’47 and we moved back to California in 1955 but this time in mom’s 1951 Chevrolet and dad’s 1951 Buick. The memories of Pullman cars, the dining car and all the troops on the trains during the war and the huge celebration on VJ Day have stayed with me for all these decades and the railroads were the common denominator binding everything together.
