What if the person drawing the weird animal hybrid was just bad at drawing? I try to draw all the time, and they all look nothing like what I was trying to draw...

Gary Larson had a great cartoon he made of a caveman yelling at his child for painting on the wall, like kids today will do.

Just imaging some caveman artist burying his shitty picture of a gazelle like "I hope no one ever sees this." and now it's one of the most popular paintings today.

As a Namibian I am absolutely thrilled that the Apollo II caves were included. However, the most mysterious painting in Namibia is generally regarded to be the "White Lady" painting in the Brandberg massif, a painting I was privileged enough to view for the first time this February.

Boar rock - "Hey guys, remember that time Tuktuk got chased by the animal he was stalking? That was hilarious! We should write that down!"

its always some mystical spiritual ritual ceremonial space, and never just, you know, 'the pub'

Inigo Montoya would want to know about that one handprint.

When the weather goes crazy, where better to protect the kids than a big cave, set up a few torches and tell stories from the walls, while thunder and lighting roar outside it would have been cosy, scary fun for everyone.

I had seen some research that suggested that some cave art had dots next to certain animals indicating that they were tracking how long an animal gestates before being born. There might be some really important discoveries hidden in those symbols that we take for granted in our modern day where we can just look it up. Someone had to track it the first time.

The 6-fingered hand was probably just one of them saying “hey, put your finger here, it’s gonna freak someone out.”

I always thought the hands were their way of writing "I was here" since it's not like they had signatures.

Hi! I'm an archaeologist. If we ever use the phrase "it must have been a form of ritual" it means we have no idea whatsoever. "Ritual" as a descriptor is the same as that drawer in your kitchen that has the tape, pens, old keys. a straw in its wrapper, etc. : )

Picasso left the Lescaux caves proclaiming “we have learnt nothing in 11,000 years”.

Turns out cave shelters were actually the first rave clubs😂

Looks like a prehistoric birthday party!

Children still draw on walls .. and sometimes draw what they imagine, not what they witness.  I was fond of drawing space ships and medieval battle scenes, often on the same chalkboard.  Perhaps one should take these cave paintings as a data point, but proof of nothing (except perhaps that polydactyly was rare, even in the distant past).

8:20 it really doesn’t look all that human to me.  Ik what you’re probably thinking when you see me say that, but hear me out.  The rear legs look very cattle-like to me.  I’ve got a picture on my phone of one of my calves in an almost identical stance and, the legs do look a little different than what most people see when they imagine a cow.  Also, cattle have a particular low-speed gate where their rear legs remain fairly straight.  That’s what I’m seeing when I look at this image.  It seems to me that some archeologist who wasn’t familiar with those type of animals, saw this and immediately identified what they are familiar with; humans.  Then they attributed all kinds of complicated meanings to it when, it’s exactly what it looks like, a normal animal that the artist wanted to record.

I dare anyone to explain or try to figure out a Salvador Dali or a Jackson Pollack painting, let alone a bit of abstract art from a few thousand years ago.

Cavemen families visiting friends… “I love what you’ve done to the cave!”

it's amusing when an awkward drawing of some animal has 'obvious' human legs, as though that part of the drawing they nailed it, they just couldn't get the rest right
