At 91 dad had a 1 owner 49 silver streak that still runs great. He passed away a year ago.  Yes, its still in the family. No, the engine has never been apart. Thanx for the video...love the family interactions.  I got tired of all the swearing in alberta, and this video popped up. Thank you.

FYI: Those white plug style packing peanuts are 'edible'.  They are made of a type of sucrose and starch.  Wouldn't recommend a bunch of them for Murph, but they should be non-toxic unless contaminated with other badness...

When you can't get the spark plugs out easily, you know the engine is going to put up a fight. These cars from the 40s are true gems when it comes to the styling used.

In 1964 I turned 16 YO and got my drivers license. I'd already arranged to buy a car from an older guy I worked with. I sold my bicycle for $25 and borrowed $10 from my Dad, and purchased a 1951 Pontiac (Chieftain?, I think) for $35 . The car had 110,000 miles on the odometer, had been parked in a garage for two years, but it started and ran smooth with very little smoke out the tailpipe. It had very little rust, black paint covered in dust. A mohair interior that sorta smelled like a wet dog. I proudly drove my first car home and parked it in the driveway behind my Dads '62 Mercury Montclair. I spent the entire afternoon vacuuming, washing and waxing the black lacquer paint until it gleamed. Dad came out and looked at my Poncho, then at his dull black Merc. and set to, trying to make his car shinier than mine ! (No Way!) My poncho, whom I named "Chief", got me to work all that summer, taking me and several girls to drive-in movies, cruising the local drive-in restaurants, etc. The next Christmas, all my presents were for my car. Fuzzy dice for the mirror, a cushion for me to sit on to see over the steering wheel better, a magnet flashlight to hang under the dash, a chrome air cleaner for the Carter two-bbl carburetor , (from my Dad). I parked my car on the street in front of our house on Christmas Eve, 8:30 Christmas morning, a drunk in a borrowed '56 chevy broadsided my car at 50 mph. My Mom and Dad, through physical restraint, kept me from strangling the Drunk in our front yard. The car was towed to a junk yard and I was allowed to retrieve my belongings before "The Chief" met his end. I bagged up my fuzzy dice, cushion and flashlight. The amazing thing about "The Chief", was all the guages, the radio and the electric clock still worked. The clock had a second hand and went Tick-tick-tick when it was quiet outside. I heard the clock ticking until I un-hooked the battery, and the junk yard went quiet. 16 YO me thought, "Oh, no! I've killed him!!"

41:20 - Only a car guy will understand how good it feels to over come an obstacle like this stuck plug. I just got our 1950 ford 8n running and driving leak free for the first time in a good 2 -2.5 years. Feels really good to see it run and drive again.

With flat heads you almost always have to take the head off to free up stuck valves.
