Greg Alba & Tara Erickson watch The Love Hypothesis (2026) for the first time in this full movie reaction and review of Prime Video’s Ali Hazelwood adaptation! Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate whose impulsive kiss with intimidating professor Dr. Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman, launches an increasingly complicated fake relationship. Greg & Tara react to the hallway kiss, Olive and Adam’s fake-dating rules, the campus carry, the hotel’s “only one bed” predicament, the steamy romance, and the dramatic conference involving Dr. Tom Benton.

Directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling BookTok novel, The Love Hypothesis stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith (Riverdale, Hustlers), Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile), Rachel Marsh as Anh Pham (Fallout, Adults), Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm Browne (Only Murders in the Building, Strange World), Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy Langley (The White Lotus, Bel-Air), and Arty Froushan as Dr. Tom Benton (Carnival Row, House of the Dragon).

Greg & Tara discuss Olive and Adam’s chemistry, the fake-dating and enemies-to-lovers tropes, the adaptation’s BookTok appeal, and the story’s famous origins as Reylo-inspired fanfiction—made even wilder by Adam actor Tom Bateman being married to Star Wars’ Rey herself, Daisy Ridley.

In the book, Adam had been pining for Olive for almost three years. He first fell in love with her when he met her in his lab bathroom

guys, this is literally a star wars fanfiction based on rey and kylo ren

@melaniem948 8 days ago

Olive is a graduate student, not an undergrad and you can date a professor while even in undergrad. It’s frowned upon but as long as they aren’t in charge of you, then it’s okay

The relationship portrayal on screen was 10/10… I absolutely loved the first 90 minutes.

The third act with the rewriting of the events with Tom, Olive, and Adam disappointed me the most. I didn’t feel as satisfied since in the book, Olive accidentally records Tom sexually harassing her and she plays it for an entire grant board, and I really felt like that fully destroyed Tom’s career. Also the movie didn’t fully flesh out how Tom’s influence with their previous mentor made Adam’s life a living hell.

Also, they deflated Malcom’s storyline 😢 Jaboukie deserved better, he crushed it in this.

I swear if Brittany Murphy was still here and hadn't passed away, her and Lili Reinhardt could've played siblings in a movie or TV series because they look so much like each other.

Did they ever do People We Meet on Vacation? If not, PLEASE!!! It’s so good! And it’s another book adaption — 10/10 recommend!

@Likeicare96 7 days ago (edited)

51:15 this basically happened in the book. He propositioned her while she’s practicing her presentation (and recording herself) and not in the hotel room so she had it on tape from the beginning.

I wish they didn’t change that because the ending was felt pretty unrealistic without that evidence. It’s unfortunate but lots of universities brush these kind of incidents with professors all the time. Especially one with a renowned academic reputation that brings in a lot of funding. Like he may take a forced sabbatical but ultimately, be fine.

He looks like Tom Ellis (Lucifer) in this

As a stand alone movie i thought it was great!! as a book adaptation i didn't think it was good. They essentially took Adam's character away. Nothing about his past, friends, or even that he had feelings for Olive all along since they met in the bathroom. Also they completely changed Malcolm's character into a dick lol. Also in the book you see Olive realizing Adam is just blunt but actually a super fair professor/supervisor lmao, in the show they never show how he is not really unfair just blunt. Like I hate that the movie didn't disconstruct the dr. evil persona. Adam didn't change, he was already fair lol

@DannyOMallley 9 days ago

The dr evil guy plays a serial killer in the tv show based on a true story with kaley cuoco 😂 good show by the way.

@j_heessi 7 days ago

1:12:50 The book does WAY more justice in this regard. And it was public infront of faculty members during an interview at a restaurant. And there was empirical evidence to get Tom charged and punished for his actions well apart from Adam's fist of vengeance ofc😊
