She Lit Her Husband On Fire | Kiranjit Ahluwalia • Desi Crime

In the stillness of an English night, a fire flickered to life—small at first, then all-consuming. By the time the flames died down, a man lay unrecognizable, his body burned beyond recognition. One woman stood in the corner, watching this man burn, watching as the past ten years of her life turned to ash, not screaming, not calling for help. As the world would learn of this story, many would come to applaud the fire that was lit that 1989 evening because its flame would give warmth to women across the world. This is the story of that fire, of that man who burned, and of the woman who stood and watched. This is the story of Kiranjit and Deepak Ahluwalia.

This case is a slap to those who say to domestic violence victims why they didn't leave the abusive relationship
Kiranjit is really brave! We are proud of you!!

This fire became a torch bearer against domestic violence and advocated importance in changes in the laws against such abuses. I'm glad in the end justice was served 🔥

Kiranjit's wikipedia page reads like someone on Deepak's side has written it. Somebody should change that.

I learnt about this case when Provoked movie had come out two decades ago... so glad you guys covered it and did full justice to it. More power to Kiranjit.

What about psychological abuse? With no tell tale bruises but with a debilitating low self esteem, hopelessness, anxiety! Forever scarred!

It just infuriates me that her family provided no support. What was the role of her brother in her life and how he can even justify his living in this world after saying go and please you abusive husband? This abuse must have also been present back at her brother's home (might not that worse) .

I am a psychiatrist and thus wanted to point out something to prevent misinformation. Battered person syndrome is there in ICD but NOT listed in DSM. The symptoms of BPS can overlap with symptoms of PTSD though. Sorry I’m just correcting a factual error. I love your podcast!!!

THIS MADE ME CRY, i am a failed student of law and some things in indian law did not make sense(not judging it is a continuous process) and i know so many punjabi and specially punjabi women are still fighting and some are silently fighting this or some are in even worse conditions the punjabi community is a very different community with different customs and traditions where in some way women are in good and very bad conditions like in actual some are in good and really bad conditions. Some one should cover it properly

They are never bad dreams. These statements are our ways of saying, "I am fine now" but those nights and days of silent suffering and not being able to explain to anyone who asks "but why..." those nightmares never go away.

There is a whole episode of Satyamev Jayate, covering the topic of domestic abuse and how it affects not just women, but also children that is a must watch

@ponkminer 1 year ago

11:53 the worst advice anyone should give to a person undergoing abuse from a spouse is this. they will never change by having a kid, good lord its so sad this idea still goes around and it essentially traps the victim with kids.

I feel like after seeing countless cases of domestic abuse that we see, there needs to be some law ( I am not sure if there already is, please let me know if this exists) that family of the women also face some charges when they keep sending the women back to their abusers just because “what will the society say”. That’s the only way family will stop sending the victims back to their abusive partners.
