The Middle East is once again on the edge of escalation. Iran is returning to its nuclear project at full force, talks with the United States are getting stuck, and American officials are already preparing for the possibility of a military move. President Trump says Iran is “in very bad shape,” and adds that eventually, Tehran will give up.
Israel is revealing new intelligence on Iran’s nuclear program, including new construction at Mount Pickaxe — a deep underground site south of Tehran that could become part of Iran’s attempt to rebuild nuclear capabilities. Netanyahu secretly flew to Abu Dhabi for talks with President Mohammed bin Zayed, as Israel, the Emirates, and other Gulf states prepare for the next stage of the Iran crisis.
Iran failed to block the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Navy and Gulf oil producers are improving their ability to keep tankers moving, while Saudi Arabia is also moving crude through the East-West pipeline toward the Red Sea. The world is not simply closing Hormuz — it is keeping Hormuz open for almost everyone while closing it mainly on Iran.
Inside Iran, the pressure is becoming dangerous. Inflation is raging, the currency is collapsing, and the dollar exchange rate on the free market has crossed 250,000 tomans. The regime is increasing security in the streets out of fear that a new wave of protests could erupt, while voices inside Iran are calling for a preemptive strike against the United States.
The Yemeni front is entering a new and dangerous stage. The Iranian-backed Houthis are expanding their hold around Bab al-Mandab after taking control of Mokha, Dhubab, and Perim Island. They now claim they found “Israeli spy bases” on Yemeni soil, but so far there is no independent evidence of an Israeli presence at the site. China is supplying weapons components to the Houthis, Europe is warning it does not have enough warships to defend Red Sea traffic, and Saudi Arabia is increasing its strikes.
After more than two decades, American forces are completing their withdrawal from their last bases in Iraq. Security officials warn that the vacuum could strengthen pro-Iranian militias, expand Tehran’s influence, and even allow ISIS to try to reorganize. At the same time that Washington is tightening pressure on Iran at sea and through sanctions, it is reducing its ground presence in areas Iran wants to fill.
Iran is delaying Hamas’s request to renew financial support. According to reports, Tehran is disappointed with Hamas’s failure to destabilize Judea and Samaria at the level Iran wanted. In Iran’s eyes, Hamas is not only a terror organization — it is a tool. And when the tool does not deliver, the money begins to get stuck.
