Did they really give out apartments for free in the USSR? Why did millions of families stand in queues for housing for years, living in communal apartments, dormitories and barracks? How affordable was housing in the Soviet state and could citizens freely dispose of the apartments they received?

In this issue, we analyze one of the most common myths about the USSR. You will learn how the housing distribution system worked, why people waited 10–20 years for apartments, how communal apartments arose, what cooperative housing is and why even after receiving an apartment, people did not become its full owners.

We will show archival footage, statistics and eyewitness accounts to understand how the Soviet Union's housing system actually functioned and why the propaganda about "free apartments" does not stand up to scrutiny by facts.
