What happens when 20, 30, or even more people suddenly require medical assistance in a serious accident? 🚑🚒

This exact scenario was practiced during a large-scale mass casualty incident (MCI) exercise in Alsfeld: a multi-vehicle collision with numerous people, some seriously injured and trapped.

Firefighters, paramedics, and disaster relief workers practiced their cooperation in a mass casualty incident. From initial triage and technical rescue to patient triage and transport organization, all the way to assigning patients to appropriate hospitals, a multitude of tasks had to be coordinated.

A particular challenge in an MCI is that, especially at the beginning, a large number of injured people are met with only limited emergency personnel and resources. Decisions must be made quickly about which patients are treated and transported first and where the available resources are most urgently needed.

We are covering the exercise and showing you how the fire department and paramedics work together in such a situation, what command structures are established, and how the Vogelsberg district's new MCI concept works in practice.
