Long-haul low-cost airlines and the A321LR/XLR
Long-haul low-cost airlines have always failed so far. Norwegian had to abandon its long-haul business, Wow Air went bankrupt, and Eurowings handed over its long-haul operations to Lufthansa's leisure airline, Discover Airlines.
But could the new Airbus A321 XLR change all that?
In this video, we explain the structural problems that have so far caused long-haul low-cost airlines to fail. From time zones and high personnel costs to competition from network airlines and the problem of filling wide-body aircraft – we cover all aspects.
The A321 XLR, with its small capacity of 180 passengers and a range of up to 8,700 kilometers, could enable new point-to-point connections away from major hubs.
Jetblue already regularly flies the Airbus A321 LR across the Atlantic. Air Transat is now flying from Toronto to Berlin, and Wizz Air is planning to fly from Milan to Abu Dhabi with its A321 XLR.
Does this mark the end of the hub-and-spoke era as we know it? With over 800 orders, the market is certainly showing great interest in this revolutionary concept.
