The best Castlevania anime is Vampire Hunter D.

Considering DMC fans are now feeling what actual Castlevania fans are feeling, safe to say the chickens have come home to roost.

I thought I was the only one who thought this cartoon was overrated AF.

God this is cathartic.

i've been waiting for someone to lay out the actual problems with this show because i genuinely feel crazy whenever i see people glazing it to hell and back. how it got so popular is beyond me but that's an entirely separate, sadder conversation. you hit the nail on the head and i'd love to hear your thoughts on the next season!!

Looking back, the show was overrated, took itself way too seriously and went off and did it's own thing but in a bad way.

I’m glad to see somebody stating the writing was horrible in general and I am tired of seeing others make excuses for it.

And it gets worse with Season 3. As a fan of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, it hurts to sit through due to the character assassination of Hector. Anybody who’s played that game does not like what Netflix did to him.

oh my god thank you for actually having the most genuine critique regarding this show on this site, it's refreshing to see someone actually illustrate how insane this show's pacing, characters and world building are. i've been ranting about this show on my twitter ever since s2 bc i had naive hope it would get better looool. im a huge castlevania game fan and i was so excited for it when it got announced because the entire backdrop of the first show revolves around dracula's curse and curse of darkness, the most fleshed out and beloved set of games in terms of stories and characters and cool lore.

so it was really disappointing when trevor's hot-headed, cocky yet caring nature was reduced to being an offensive alcoholic stereotype, alucard being a writers' pet to show off how cool all of his abilities are and constantly being rude and snarky for no reason (and in the games he actively struggles with and loathes his vampiric side due to his father's actions lol. complexity what's that!), sypha being the most bland girlboss that has to act like a mom to bickering children almost, and the 4th member of the party grant danasty is just cut entirely bc ellis thought his name was stupid and him being a pirate (he's a noble thief archetype, the pirate thing is a mistranslation) didn't make any sense but covered wagons and the roman catholic church in 1400s wallachia is fine and dandy. i'm grateful grant was spared from the horrors though lol. and don't get me started on how horrible and racially insensitive the treatment of isaac and hector are compared to how entertaining their game counterparts are handled. (btw i hope you do videos on s3 and s4 bc they're....oof.) the games have their fair share of anachronistic elements but it's a lot more fun and earnest.

it's so disappointing because castlevania has so much to expand upon. dracula's castle is a literal creature of chaos that morphs and changes and is almost like a living being in order to justify why it's appearance and interiors are different in each game. there could've been some really good set pieces there esp for the climatic dracula battle! the main point of the games is the journey to the castle and you get so many fun areas like clock towers, ancient ruins, full on towns, forests and swamps, catacombs, AN ENTIRE GHOST PIRATE SHIP and they thought the most interesting area was an uninspired library where you don't even learn much about the belmonts or still not much of trevor in the process.

lisa and dracula's relationship is also so miniscule in the games, no flashbacks or anything i was really banking on the show to nail their dynamic and it honestly just makes it worse? making lisa even more of a fridged wife than she was before...dracula being more akin to a tamed beast. rather than someone who genuinely loved and appreciated his wife and her human nature, her willingness to learn and to heal and to accept others despite where they came from. (AND MIND YOU IN THE GAMES DRACULA WAS STILL OMINOUS AND EVIL BUT HE WAS NEVER ACTUALLY A MASS MURDERER/JUST CHILLED IN HIS EVIL CASTLE PEACEFULLY UNTIL LISA DIED SO. LOL.)

there's a lot to unpack with this show and it's misogyny, rape apologia, straight up classism and defeatist and almost disgusted attitudes towards humanity, how cruel and empty the world feels, the racism, its weird balance of trying to be "accurate" but also including anachronisms whenever they feel like it, the rushed and uneven pacing, the pity points of the game references where they're just background elements or monsters instead of respecting why people loved these characters in the first place, the shock value of the gore and abuse...it's all very unfortunate and feels like it doesn't want to be castlevania at all. castlevania is silly, it's heartfelt, it's ultra dramatic, it's a gothic soap opera it's a cheesy campy hammer horror fest it's just everything lol. there's so many interesting things about this nearly 40 year series to pull from and the show's result being a gross disdain for castlevania's legacy is a shame. again thank you for the fun and engaging critiques, i felt so seen this entire video especially when you kept bringing up the fact that nothing has any consequences or real build-up at all lmaooo oh my god. i'm not asking for a 100% faithful real adaptation of the games, but i just want something that respects the world and characters with fun presentation and reinterpretations that actually make sense!!

EDIT: Also, it was just an excuse for Catholic-slander. In Romania in the 1400s they were Orthodox, because of the Schism. It wouldnt have even been the Catholic Church there

The Castlevania show means a lot to me. It got me into the greater Castlevania fandom as well as the games. Once I found out how insanely butchered the characters in the show are compared to the games, I just kept seeing more and more flaws. It sucked not being able to find ANYONE else that agreed with me.

I wished the show also told us why these fashion choices.
