The Gone with the Wind Casting Story Everyone Gets Wrong
Golden Reel Memories
2,110 views
Almost everyone knows some version of this story: Hollywood searched the entire country for an unknown actress to play Scarlett O'Hara, and out of nowhere, Vivien Leigh was discovered. It's one of the most famous "discovery" stories in movie history and it's only half true. Leigh had been quietly campaigning for the role for almost a year before her famous "chance" encounter with producer David O. Selznick, and Clark Gable the actor everyone remembers as the inevitable Rhett Butler very nearly wasn't allowed to play the role at all, tangled up in a one-sided studio deal with his own boss's father-in-law.
