In the autumn of 1888, the Whitechapel district of East London became the scene of one of the greatest mysteries in criminal history: the murders attributed to Jack the Ripper. This serial killer, whose identity was never confirmed, baffled London police for months, and his enigmatic image captivated the press and popular culture.

The series of crimes began in August 1888 with the murder of Mary Ann Nichols. Nichols' body was found in the early hours of August 31 with a deep cut to her throat and multiple wounds to her abdomen. Just a week later, on September 8, the body of Annie Chapman was found in a courtyard on Hanbury Street with similar injuries. The brutality of these two crimes and the fact that they were separated by only a few days sparked panic throughout the city.

But it didn't end there. On September 30, in what became known as the "double murder," Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were killed. Stride was found on Berner Street, and Eddowes in Mitre Square, in the heart of the City of London. Stride had suffered only a cut to her throat, while Eddowes was partially dismembered. Police suspected that someone had appeared at the Berner Street crime scene, forcing the killer to flee and find a new victim by moving to a different neighborhood to avoid being tracked. The precision of the cuts led investigators to believe the perpetrator had anatomical knowledge, perhaps a surgeon or a butcher.

But one more crime was to come, perhaps the worst of all. On November 9, the remains of Mary Jane Kelly were found in a boarding house in Spitalfields. Unlike the previous murders, this one took place in a closed room. This gave the killer much more time to work on his victim. Lying on a cot, Kelly's body was completely mutilated, and his face was entirely unrecognizable.

But what made this criminal truly special was not only the brutality of the crimes, which lacked the usual motives like robbery or rape, but also the fact that he allegedly revealed his identity through a series of letters addressed to newspapers and the police. He dubbed himself Jack the Ripper in the most famous of these letters. Known for its salutation "Dear Chief," it was received by the Central News Agency on September 27. The next letter was even more macabre, claiming to be written from Hell itself. It is not known for certain whether these letters were authentic, but they contributed to the killer's legend.

The police tried unsuccessfully for months to catch the perpetrator of these crimes, but they were unsuccessful. Several theories about his identity were proposed. Doctors and even members of royalty were mentioned, but none have been conclusively proven. The case, therefore, remains open. The Whitechapel murders had a profound impact on Victorian society. They exposed the conditions of poverty and deprivation that existed in London's slums. This led to social and urban reforms in the following years. Their influence on the press and literature was even greater. Jack the Ripper gave birth to a new journalistic genre and inspired novelists like Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Sherlock Holmes around the same time these crimes were committed.
