"Jack the Ripper, a friend of the show"

I was shocked at the end when it's revealed that Tom Holland is Jack, finally case closed.

I remember years ago a criminologist said that on Judgement Day St Peter will ask The Ripper to identify himself and when he does all the Ripper experts will turn to each other and say "who?"

If the Prince did it it's a bit of a case of West End boys and East End girls.

He would have been a little insignificant guy like The Green River killer. Great series.

My grandfather was a young man in the late 1800''''s he said having a conversation with a lady meant negotiating for her services not general chatting

Worth noting that Eddie Campbell, the artist that Alan Moore worked with on From Hell, agrees that the William Gull theory does nothing but besmirch the good name of an important doctor of his time. Moore originally focused on Gull because he worked well with the themes Moore wanted to present, not because he thought Gull was actually the murderer; but as he wrote the series, Moore seems to have convinced himself that his fictional account was actually true!

Somebody working in a slaughter house would have far more skill with a knife than a doctor, even a surgeon. There were very few abdominal surgeries in the 1880's with most of these being the removal of massive life threatening ovarian cysts. and virtually no surgery on kidneys.

This means that a Dr would not have the experience to quickly remove a kidney. They would however have anatomical knowledge about the close relationship between the bladder and uterus and possibly would be less likely to remove part of the former when removing the latter. This also points to a slaughterhouse worker rather than a Dr.

My issue with the royal/aristocracy/doctor suspects are that it smacks of snobbery, like those that think shakespeare didn't write his plays because he wasn't educated or from nobility.

Interesting to see the late 19th century pandemic mentioned as one of the possible reasons the murders stopped. Death from such as bloodpoisy was common for working men from any minor injury at the time, such as a dirty knife slipping and causing an injury while cutting up a horse too, but the timing is interesting.

This was a lot of fun. It was very nice to be able to separate the common beliefs from the facts of the case in only a few hours.

I love how sceptical Dominic is. Whenever he laughs, I laugh

When you were talking about William Gull being a suspect and murdering MJK’s friends, and that Eddowes may have been a case of mistaken identity, it’s worth remembering that she used Mary Kelly as an alias.

Forget royalty, toffs in opera cloaks, and bloody awful conspiracy theories, he was a local guy. I agree when they say he could have worked in a knacker's yard, butchers, or a slaughter house, Smithfield is just down the road, so a likely possibility.

If I remember correctly, in the Patricia Cornwell book she was also able to match the stationery from the Ripper letters to letters by Walter Sickert, right down to the same paper lot and edge patterns.
Doesn't prove that he was the Ripper, but he MAY have been the one writing the hoax letters.

"Not adequate preparation for opening the batting" is perhaps the best quote from The Rest is History podcasts I have watched/listened to 😂

William Henry Bury is an interesting suspect. He lived close to Whitechapel at the time of the murders. He moved to Dundee shortly after the murders stopped. He had a history of violence, was said to have worked as a horse butcher, and was a frequenter of prostitutes . He was executed 24 April 1889 for the murder of his wife Ellen.
