Brené Brown & Adam Grant on Why We Can’t Talk Anymore (And How to Fix It)

Katie Couric

Brené Brown and Adam Grant have devoted much of their work to helping people better understand conflict, communication, and human behavior. Nevertheless, the two spent years estranged after a 2016 article Grant wrote led to a falling out between them. Now, they’ve reunited for a new podcast, The Curiosity Shop, where they explore complicated and often polarizing questions with humility, nuance, and a willingness to challenge each other in real time. Katie talks with them about repairing their relationship, why so many people struggle to have honest conversations, the impact of social media and outrage culture, and what it takes to stay open-minded in an increasingly divided world.

Best. Interview. Ever!!!! Kudos to all three of you for this incredibly deep and constructive conversation. As a people pleaser who was raised to stay quiet and not rock the boat…thank you!! At 58 I’m learning to be honest, tell the truth always and be vulnerable to those who have a right to witness that part of myself. Last year I had a hard conversation with my siblings, a year post last parent passing away, and was shocked at their response when I tried to have a hard conversation with them about exclusionary behavior. Needless to say, our relationship has been irreversibly broken. Now I feel I should have never rocked the boat.

What a constructive and productive conversation you all are giving. We should be having these conversations, especially encourage each other to discuss difficult topics.

Mahalo for the conversation, and indeed the opportunity to comment feedback to their podcast. Indeed, a multitude of modeling!!! Of humanism, imperfection, absolutely vulnerability.

Smart conversation. Thank you. I just had a meeting with a CEO. I was proposing a TV sponsorship and he came into the conference room and sat right next to me. There were 7 chairs and I left the 'head' leadership chair for him and he 'chose' to sit next to me. I learned a lot from that meeting! Stay curious and thank you for helping me -- become a better communicator and conflict resolution models. PLAYBACK!

I love these 2 together.
Brene is like the rebellious fun loving brilliant big sister i always wanted, and Adam is like the intuitive smart and confident level headed brother. Both of them have all of those traits of course (covering my ass here), but the dynamic is addictive to witness in real time.

This has been a struggle for me too. My psychologist said being SHARP is necessary for preservation of boundaries and it doesn't have malice in its foundation. He said being blunt has malicious under tones within it. He said example of being sharp is what we use when parenting. He said too many people confuse being sharp with being malicious. This has helped me a lot.
