Here's a tip from an architect (in Germany): I'm quite sure the wall between the two rooms is a weight bearing wall (tragende Wand) and that's why you're limited with creating openings, there still has to be enough structure to support what's above. Usually one should leave 2/3 of the wall length intact. I'd also suggest a door that's partly glass rather than a door and a window. Also, i wouldn't even go for a window, but rather a glass panel (Festverglasung) if it's possible. It's definitely a lot cheaper than a window. Be careful with a box over the heater that holds your tools. Covering the heater too much (especially from above) reduces its efficiency significantly. I'm looking forward to seeing how you're renovating the house. I'm 100% sure you can lay tiles yourself, you're super good with your hands and already have experience with tiles on a smaller scale. Maybe you could have a Fliesenleger come and explain to you how it works and help you get started, then you might be confident enough to continue on your own. Also don't be afraid to do everything in the kitchen by yourself except for the electric installation of the stove if you have one, that's a legal thing in Germany. But the rest you can do, no worries. Even the installation of the sink and dishwasher and the stuff with silicone, it's not hard at all. Good luck and happy to give more advice :)

As you are adding a door between the pottery studio and the kiln room, you should create a closet using the existing door of the kiln room by adding a wall on the corridor that presently goes to that room. That corridor is going to be dead space anyway. Also, as it is your home, you can add brackets on the ceiling for your filming lights. That would liberate floor space

Mia, keep the quirkiness of random pots from you and others at least some place in the new studio. Don't make it too sterile!  It's such a cute style and also cute memory for you. I love to look at them at least <3

For the lights situation, think about mounting your filimg lights on ceiling tracks, this would free up floor space and they honestly look so cool!

I came across one of the smartest ideas for an unplumbed pottery sink I've ever seen the other day! The artist had taken a large clear storage tub (30ish gallon I think) and found a sink that fit in it with the rim resting on the rim of the tub. She had added a pour spout around 1/3 up from the bottom so she could wash her stuff like normal from a basin faucet, allow everything to settle overnight, and then drain the water that settled over the clay the next day. Then, when the clay reached her spout (or before) she could transfer the slip to her reclaim and start the process over! Genius!

idea for your camera lights, hang them from the ceiling and you never have to worry about moving them around and it opened your floor space back and all you would have to do is swivel them in any direction you’ll need light

For organizing, since you have a laser cutter you can make your own drawer dividers to perfectly fit the items, and have labels cut/engraved into the dividers.

I commented last week on the tiling. I really do feel like you can do this. There's a self leveling compound that you can buy that makes it very easy. You would make sure the floor is very clean, anything that needs patched like gouges or cracks in the current floor should be filled in with the proper compound for the material that's there. Then you pour the leveling compound and spread it to cover the whole room. This creates a level layer that dries in about 24 hours and is ready to accept tile. The tile process is just like you've done on a smaller scale and then when that's dry, you spread grout in sections pressing it in with a foam trowel tool and cleaning off the excess.
Another option would be to do your research, get some estimates and have them separate the different processes so if you decide you can lay the tile but you don't want to do the floor prep, you can have the prep done for you. Or visa versa, if you want to do the floor prep but have someone else lay the tile, you can do that which would save you some money.

I think focusing on a full glass door between the two rooms would be better for light and visibility versus a small window. Plus less contracting work! Or like another comment said maybe even some French doors! ❤ so excited for you!

Lights/camera stuff. I would recommend that you mount tracks in the ceiling that you can attach all the stuff to. AND move it around, slide it, so you can get different angles. Also you would not be tripping over any tripods or cables.

I commented the same on the last video, the rooms were small but my mom and I tiled 2 rooms when I was a teen.  I think tiling the floor is well within your ability!

An indoor security camera is a cheap and easy way to keep an eye on laser cutters from your phone

One thing you didn't mention that I think is vital to think about is lighting. Work lighting rather than video lighting. That studio looks like it's going to be quite dark, especially on an overcast day. Additionally you might also want to consider mounting some of the video lighting to the ceiling.

I think French doors between the studio and kiln room would provide the best balance of light passthrough and utility. Will a larger kiln fit through a standard door? A larger opening is a good insurance policy for the future.

So excited to for you! What about sliding door? Then you can keep them open or closed as you need them, they can have window panes in them to let in the light, but will make the studio feel open and bigger. It would look cool if you could make a mosaic tiled area on the floor with your quilt and cross-stitch inspired patterns that you do so well, even if it is just in a small area where you can have a cosy corner with a comfy couch/ chair.

Hire out the tile floor work. Especially since this is likely your forever home, pay more and get it right the first time. You’ll be glad you did. Very excited to see your progress!

I would put the studio/ filming lights on track mounts on the ceiling. That way they don’t take up floor space and you can move them easily left and right.

Tiling the floor is back and knee breaking, doable but with a hit to your body.
Thoughts on the design: love all of your plans, one thought I had was to make the kiln room only accessible through the studio. Add a wall in the hallway and use that dead space as a storage closet.
Someone else suggested French doors between studio and kiln room which I was also going to toss out.
Overall I think it will be great however you design it!!
Congratulations 🎉 so excited to see it unfold❤

I have a suggestion for a project.  A taco plate.  I accidentally discovered them but the plates that have space for sides only come in plastic or disposable.  I think that would be a cool ceramic project.
