Even if no one reads this comment, but in the hope that someone does, I want to say that 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould is the best film ever made. I have never seen any film attempt to utilize such a diverse choice of film making methods while still maintaining a singular vision. To seamlessly transition from one short film which is a narrative to one which is a documentary, to one that is found footage, to one that is experimental animation, while simultaneously developing a cohesive narrative I have never seen executed so well. Sure it lacks major financing and some of the performances are to be desired. It does not really matter, its truly a masterpiece.

I have just watched Derek Jarman's Blue (1993), and I think I am going to carry it with me for the rest of my life. It electrically charges my skin, my senses are heightened, I am in a state of uncommon receptivity throughout. It shouldn't work but it does. It is a cold candlelight vigil and a psychomachia, an unflinching encounter with the Real.

I nearly cried watching this because Derek Jarman's Blue had such an emotional hold on me when I first watched it in college and I didn't expect it to be mentioned here. To be forced into the perspective of the director as he succumbs to illness and confronts death, feeling both the frustration and sublime of those moments, relying on the limits of your imagination. It's an exercise in empathy, testing the limits through extreme deconstruction of the medium of cinema.

Tier 1 should be blockbuster movies like Avengers, Back To The Future, Indiana Jones, Terminator or Robocop. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people didn't saw any movies from Tier 1.
Mirror and Inland Empire in Tier 2 only is crazy.

An elephant sitting still is perhaps my favourite film.
It could have been such a different film, apparently the director initially wanted to film using static shots but budget constraints wouldn’t allow for this, so, the film was shot handheld. The producer also wanted to restrict the runtime to two hours and made the filmmaking process incredibly stressful. I’ve heard there are Weibo posts from the director that describe making the film, I haven’t been able to find these though.
It’s a triumph the film actually got made, and it’s unfortunate that it consumed the director entirely. RIP Hu Bo.
