Rain and Thunder are two powerful German Shepherds whose family became afraid to take them outside. After Albert and Tanya stopped walking them during a home renovation, pent-up energy turned into explosive reactions around other dogs, and for nearly a year fear kept Rain and Thunder mostly indoors, making their dog aggression and leash reactivity harder to overcome.
In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, I show Albert and Tanya how fear and uncertainty travel down the leash. We drain the dogs' energy through running, then build calm corrections, confident body language, and clear boundaries around other dogs. At the Dog Psychology Center, Thunder faces his biggest challenge: joining my balanced pack and learning that another dog's presence does not mean conflict.
I also meet Garrett and Taylor, whose small dog Milo runs their home with nonstop barking and nipping. Two very different dogs, one lesson: when humans feed fear or tension, dogs feel it. When we provide calm, confident leadership, our dogs can finally let go and follow.

Rain y Thunder son dos poderosos German Shepherds cuya familia llegó a sentir miedo de sacarlos a caminar. Cuando Albert y Tanya dejaron de pasearlos durante la remodelación de su casa, toda esa energía acumulada empezó a manifestarse en reacciones explosivas al encontrarse con otros perros. Durante casi un año, el miedo hizo que Rain y Thunder pasaran la mayor parte del tiempo dentro de casa, mientras su agresividad hacia otros perros y su reactividad con la correa se volvían cada vez más difíciles de manejar.
En este episodio de Better Human Better Dog, les enseño a Albert y Tanya cómo el miedo y la inseguridad se transmiten a través de la correa. Primero drenamos la energía de los perros corriendo y después trabajamos con correcciones en calma, un lenguaje corporal seguro y restricciones claras al estar cerca de otros perros. Also, Cesar is so fit! Still doing roller blading at 57 years old. It was also cool to see his son helping out!!
It would have been possible to manage him safely using a muzzle and to burn off his energy properly by driving to a quiet area for long walks. I view the alternative as a matter of convenience disguised as fear.
If I feel guilty around the dog, I’m doing everything wrong; I end up granting too much freedom when it’s inappropriate and being overly restrictive when freedom would actually be possible. It’s great that Cesar provides guidelines and principles. I’d write them down on a board so I’d never forget them.
