In this video, I discuss how much a mastering chain should cost. It could cost anything from £10k to £200k. Does it make a difference though. What I do think is that having a mastering chain full of expensive gear gives you options. You don't need to use it all. You can pick and choose what you use.

Not counting converters, which can actually easily add $10k or up to $20k. There are great options in the $3k-$5k range, but you have to add that if your're talking about a mastering chain. Also, if you want a mastering console, that can be another $5k-$9k. So its a real investment. It can get expensive.

Not working with sound right now (used to play on a sound system but kept some of the equipment..) but slowly building a 'mastering rack' just because I like it really (and because it kicks any million dollars 'hi-fi' out of orbit).. I only like to buy legendary equipment from legendary brands because those are very durable, sound insanely good and also look good (and also only increase in value, not that I think of selling, but it IS a point I think...).. Now I just need an (mastering grade) EQ and Interface :3 (not thinking about tapes because I got lots of tubes already XD)... Good that I'll be able to produce records that I like and are hard to find =D (like runs of 500 records, stuff like that heheh), but doing mostly because of the sound really... all the gear now would by around 9 or 10k, for the whole thing I think around 18 to 20k (not counting the monitors)..

11k so far for my mastering chain, and that's for 4 pieces of analog gear plus my MPC XL. I'd like to add the Burl Bomber B2 or the Dangerous Audio AD+, for my final piece.

Even though 500 series is not ideal for power supply reasons and such if someone only has a 5-6k budget for a mastering chain would you recommend 500 series to get more options for your money? If so what 500 pieces would make a great mastering chain?

The used market is key for stuff like this. You can spend half the money, or even less on some really great stuff. Most of my clients have no idea what the gear even is or how much it costs. The retail prices on a lot of this stuff is straight up robbery. There aren't more than $150 to $200 worth of components in the really high end stuff. As long as the unit has good power and a characterful tone, I don't care how much it costs. I have custom built hand wired tube gear from the 70s that gets used just as much as some of my Behringer rack gear.

I don’t have tons of thousands of euros to spend on gear so it might sound good but I can’t afford that
I’ll guess I’ll just continue to use my plug-ins and that’s it
